There was no error code but every time I try to play something online (I tried with mw2 and gta5 online) I get the message "to do this, change a setting".

It says something that I can't see what people "make". Yet my settings allow it.

I've done everything from switching it to the adult settings (I am an adult but I had custom settings), adding the custom settings again, and restarting/powering off my xbox.

This start today for some reason. I've had no issues with this in the past, with the same settings.

Xbox support suggested doing a factory reset.

The error your getting is how your privacy settings are set Having adult defalts shouldnt give that error though. You have something blocking content that shares with people so I would look in your privacy settings for that and try turning it no and off again.

I switched my settings, and I mean I tried everything. I allowed everyone to everything and tried putting it back to my custom. No matter what I do it doesn't work. Even for the specific setting it wants

It started today

A factory reset keeping your games and apps is a good call. You could also try setting your privacy settings on a other device like a PC at xbox.com/privacy. We cant really advise much more, the issue your having means that your privacy settings are blocking what you want to do.
