Simple terms: if the CPU is soldered on, you need to buy a new system board.
If it's socketed, you could replace it if it's compatible

I have taken a laptop apart
most of the time you can only replace the hard drive and ram...
the cpu may be accessible but only if you want to change thermal paste
I think these days a lot of stuff is soldered on though

YEAH. The actual disassembly process is a royal pain

very few laptops make it easy

Full disassembly is tough but replacing the drive for example should be easy
unless its a complicated device or has torx screws

a good number of laptops have the drives set inside the assembly, which require you to take the bottom, the keyboard, and the upper chassis out

#

so "should be easy" is not at all true

I know I'm a bit late, but I swapped out an NVMe drive in my laptop when I bought it ~3 years ago, and while I can swap an NVMe drive on a desktop in a matter of a minute or less, it took me 2+ hours to disassemble and reassemble my laptop, having to be careful I didn't break (and properly reseated) every single ribbon cable that only had ~3mm of extra room to move. I decided after I got it apart (even before reassembling) I was never adding more RAM, and would just buy a new laptop if I needed more

all because it was on side of the motherboard next to the keyboard

Depends on the material. While vents may have some reflection, the metal there did seem a bit too shiny for what would typically be used in most vents. It's usually more of a dull metal.

Well just looking at RDR 2 and other current game sizes and can say we need external hdd support for Series X games

alleviating the issue I talked about, where games are only as big as they are because they have to support hard drives....because the assets have to be placed in multiple sectors of the platter due to I/O speed limitations

aww, that's nice. Fingers crossed he picks the components well. Just remember what I said about your GPU options. Also, I'd like to add one other thing. Avoid any blower style card. They will generally be GPUs with one fan on them and amongst the cheapest. Blower style GPUs when it comes to cooling are poor so it is better to look at others with two or even three fans, if the case will allow for it

Honestly wish every game could run as well as Doom Eternal does on PC. Maxed settings, 1080p and I'm getting an easy 141 FPS. Uncapped I get more but yeah. Doom Eternal plays so well!

Heat is pulled when air passes over it

#

Think about your motherboard sitting in an open room vs having a fan push constant air over it

#

Anything with a fan not directly attached to it will run hotter. Mobo, HDD, SSD, etc.

Your parts will also collect dust way faster due to having no control over air pressure or filters in the way

#

^ this alone is why I don’t do it. Your CPU and GPU may run a few degrees cooler but it’s not worth having all of your parts exposed and sucking in dust like it’s nobody’s business

b450 is AM4. All Ryzen CPUs from 1st to 3rd gen should be compatible though some may require a bios update but seeing as it is b450 2nd gen (Ryzen 2X00) is supported out of the box

I play a variety of games on my PC, all at maxed settings. The Division 2 being one of my most played right now but I also have the likes of Doom Eternal, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Call of Duty Modern Warfare installed. Lucky I have a 2TB hard drive to store all these games on since the SSD I have is a mere 250GB 😱

image sharpening made it look a bit better than it otherwise would at default. Only one issue I had though was the HD reworked mod I wanted to install was taking way too long. No way was I waiting to install a 3 part (2.4GB~ per part) mod that would have taken approximately 1 hour to complete at 2MB/s on the mod site so I uninstalled the game

Just tried Ghost Recon Breakpoint on Vulkan and it performs really nice. Better than how it done on DirectX 11.
Now I just have to wait for a non-hotfix Nvidia driver since the newest WHQL driver introduced an issue with Nvidia image sharpening and some games and I don't tend to install hotfix drivers

what CPU was that prebuild using? Also, something to consider with that 1TB SSD. It may not be enough, depending on the games you plan to install. While it says 1TB it's not actually 1024MB since Windows 10 and other programs will be using up so much space before you install even one game. Could be you have around 900GB that can be used after factoring all that in. 5700 XT is a great value GPU though!

I still haven't done what I said I was going to do. Seriously though. Building a PC is not difficult. It only looks difficult. Follow the manuals and some guides online if you aren't sure and you really can't go wrong. Building a PC is rewarding since it allows you to pick exactly what components you want and often times prebuilds carry an extra labour charge, something you won't have to pay if built by yourself on top of whatever savings are made part by part

I get it, personal preference and all. I was a beginner too, almost gave up with my first custom build PC as it took me about a year to save up and buy all the parts. In that time I had many doubts but I eventually finished it and I wish I made a video of my reaction the day it all pieced together. I was so happy and impressed that I done it

Sad part is now though, if I was to build another whole new PC I probably won't get the same feelings 😦

I have a 1080 Ti and yeah, I'd follow Kronix.io's recommendation in trying Digital Foundry's optimisation guide. I highly recommend against trying maxed settings with RDR2. It even brings my 1080 Ti to below 60 FPS. Mostly 30-60 FPS. Definitely not stable

difficult to say as I have only experienced Intel for a CPU and Nvidia for GPU so far but I do like what AMD are doing. They have been making some serious ground on the CPU market the past year-ish. GPU market is still very much on Nvidia's side. They are a powerhouse but I wouldn't write off AMD completely

Intel's i9-9900K retails here in the UK around £490 while AMD's Ryzen 7 3700X is priced at a much lower £270. Both offer 8 cores and 16 threads

the thing that really puts me off a 9900K is the fact that even AMD's 12c/24t CPU (Ryzen 9 3900X) is almost £100 cheaper than a 9900K here. Priced at £410. Crazy value for 12 cores!

factor in a cooler for the Intel CPU and it likely goes over £100. AMD CPUs up to the 3900X I believe come with a cooler in the box that will do ok but if you plan to do heavy overclocking you may want to consider buying another cooler

For a laptop, you likely only have the 1 drive. This would mean you have to replace it and put a whole new drive in, and would mean reinstalling Windows and everything from scratch

#

If you had another PC and an external drive casing, you could clone your existing drive to the new one first, but that's fairly complicated to do
