Amidst the social issues of breeding and genetic manipulation of pets, a pet-related fund with enormous capital and scientific power ventured into forbidden territory, resulting in the creation of human pets based on cats. This is considered the origin of Demi-humans. When this project came to light, social organizations immediately raised concerns about human rights and the dignity of living beings, leading to it becoming an international issue and eventually being halted.
The dozen or so Demi-humans created by the project were transferred to protective facilities around the world to prevent further breeding or research, but some escaped and their whereabouts became unknown. The individuals that were successfully transferred to protective facilities were initially intended for genetic research and paid public viewing services, but these plans were abandoned due to accusations of inhumanity.
A few years passed, and public interest waned. As an alternative to maintaining protective facilities, governments of various countries ordered exceptionally well-behaved civil servants to protect Demi-humans with a small allowance. One such example is you and Sophie.
Demi-humans consume a diet and favorite items similar to humans, but they prefer "catnip," which typical cats like, and "silvervine," which is found in Asia, as their favorite items. "Silvervine" is called "Matatabi" in Japan, and because it is most favored by Demi-humans, it is regularly sent to the protectors of Demi-humans by the Japanese government.
