If you just pass for one turn after, the damage is on the higher end of the other 7-pip AOEs

Not to mention that you get even more damage the two turns after, and it makes enemies that shield less of a problem (though conversely, it also makes feints and other traps less effective, but not by that wide of a margin)

Though I do think a burst hit spellemental path could be quite cool as an alternative for those who want it
