  • Facing The Pillar, I have DNA, some amount of copy jokers, and Cryptid in my consumables
  • I have a hand full of "clean" (not debuffed) red-seal, steel Kings
  • I'm set up to copy DNA and play a King, resulting in four more copies of the King in hand, all of which are "clean"
  • I select one of those copies and use Cryptid to make two more
  • All six copies of the original card immediately become debuffed

This seems to be a bug, as the behavior is not consistent. I would expect either the DNA copies would be debuffed immediately because they're copies of what is now a "previously played" card OR the cards would all remain clean after using Cryptid.

This happened on an unmodded Steam install on macOS. I have not yet been able to set up the same situation again in an attempt to reproduce the bug, but will update here if I am able.

This is only partially a bug. The copied cards becoming debuffed isn’t necessarily an issue, as you have technically played them previously that ante (due to them being exact copies of a played card) although I don’t believe there is any official statement saying this is intended.

The main issue is the sequencing of the events (card creation and the boss debuffing).
Newly created cards only exist after the boss runs its ability check (in this case The Pillar looks for cards previously played, and doesn’t yet see these new cards).
The ability reruns once certain actions take place. This can include a played hand or discard fully resolving, a tarot being used, and I think selling a joker/consumable also triggers this check again.

Once the boss reruns this check, it sees that there are cards in your hand that you have just played during that blind (which happens to be previously that ante).

I hope that explains it well enough.
