Latest version from Steam, running on Linux. Tried both with Wine/Proton and unpacking and using a native Linux version of Love. The following error appears on boot:

Oops! Something went wrong:
Cannot link shader program object:
error: if/then statements not supported by i915 fragment shaders, should have been flattened by
peephole_select.

The hardware I'm trying to run it on is quite old, but the system as a whole is completely up to date, graphics drivers are installed and working, and love itself works (as seen by the "NO GAME" screen).

not sure if it's relevant but Steam isn't running on this machine because the UI is hell at this screen res and it's ungodly slow (so I expect Balatro won't run the fastest either, but I don't mind really, just want to see it working)

however the copy of the game was transferred from the Steam game folder on my main machine

it's relevant. steam games need to verify that you own the game before launching. you'll notice this if, on your main machine, you launch a game through the copy on your desktop. if steam is not open, it opens to verify ownership.
since you don't have steam on that computer, the game has no way of verifying that you own it.
