Hi folks, I am looking for artists who'd like to show off their chops and help me complete a fun, animal themed mod to open up more end-game options for high score runs.

The jokers involved all interact well with vanillla and have fun synergies. I made placeholder art for cards using help from tools but would love to let any interested artists flex their skills for full credit in the mod, and on the blog post / github and site for it.

See, they get it! My friend asked why i dont have more regular jokers, but my thought there was that the base game is filled with them, but also leaves room for some more artistic and pretty cards, like erosion, that $400 dollar one, or Ancient joker.

So the idea here is to make some fun and pretty cards that have fun gameplay mechanics

I see cards like Golden Repeater and Lord of Gold both as having some really obvious late game benefits

I think the best approach you could do with a negative pack would be to make a pack in a similar style to a bafoon back, but with the negative filter applied afterward. I'm trying to say chose a different unfeatured on a booster pack joker

Ok, spent some more time cleraning up the text. Turns out paint.net will try to alias when you use the paint tool, and it was bleeding into surrounding pixels. That was a lot of manual fixing.

I used a layer in paint dot net and did a gradient and changed the mode to negative, so it actually subtracted the gradients tone from the color that was there before

It's a decent attempt! If I may provide some constructive criticism, here is what I have to suggest:

  1. Keep the Card Border Consistent. I recommend in a program like Photoshop or Krita to break down a normal joker into layers for the base card, the border, the joker text, and the joker itself. That way you can just copy the element from the default joker you need without worrying about getting it right each time. I can share my Kirta file if it would be of use.
  2. Balatro Black. Except for the shading in Campfire, the darkest black in normal Joker cards is #4f6367.
  3. Thin Outlines. Look at the outlines on my jokers and Opan's lucky repeater. There are no corners as part of the outline. Including corners can make the outline seem thicker in some places than others. There are some exceptions though!
  4. Outlines Belong Outside. Whether black or white, your main outline color should only be used as an outline when it reaches out from the object in question. The middle of the robe for example shouldn't be black but rather a darker shade of purple.
  5. Vertical Gradients. Most if not all background gradients in Balatro go from top to bottom. I do see what you were trying to do with the lantern though! Along with that, you don't want the icons in the background to be parallel to each other.
  6. Shading. Shading is scary, and I can't say I'm the best at it either, but it can help art from looking flat. Thankfully as mentioned in the actual friend of Jimbo's post, shading is lighter in Balatro than in most pixel art so even if it is just an extra one or two-pixel border of a light or darker shade on each side, it should help the art pop.

I hope with these tips you can improve your artistic efforts! Looking forward to seeing how you grow!

I started with Polychrome's shader and then found that it was based on lovely2d's shader model so I spent a lot of time messing around and looking at ShaderToy and then just iterated ~20 times or so manually tweaking values, or asking AI how to constrain color values

My goal was a smoky white transparent look for the white area, with reactive gold shiney for the formerly colored areas. It turned out exactly as I wanted it.

So my next step will be to try and apply this affect on a booster pack to have a Rare Booster pack that contains some of these cards.

I already know how to apply editions for my custom packs, like the Maximum Negation and Maximum Hologram packs

Not sure if anyone is interested, but I am trying to come up with ideas for naming for a tarot or spectral card

The card applies a custom edition I added with a cool shader effect. The effect is a nod to yugioh called the Ghost Rare. It is basically a glass card meets a gold seal. It gives +10 mult and $2 when played but has a 1 in 6 chance to break

I'm interested in fun ideas for naming a tarot and also ideas around what to put on the tarot. It's just a placeholder now

For a spectral, I would call it Evocation as you are summoning a spirit. Too bad Ouija is already taken. I think a spectral makes the most sense for an edition. For a tarot, how about The Spectre?

As mentioned in the cryptid discord the antialiasing is throwing off the image. Just export the image directly from the program you are using. It would be much easier to edit that way.

That's an interesting card. The only issue I can see is that the "cost" is more of a benefit than a drawback. Consider the hanged man card, the whole purpose of which is to thin your deck. Maybe if it was actual cost like for example $20 to use, it would be a real drawback.

I removed the glass specific logic from the lovely.toml file, I actually don't need that anylonger for the stained glass jokers to work. Try and resync or pull from master again when you get a chance 🦝

Sorry I mean custom blind! I'm not personally familiar with how that boss blind works. There is a hand called fullMoon, but you can only play it when you have a certain joker because it changes how calculation works.

I thought that Hand based boss challenges all looked only at unlocked hands for the run. It seems this is a custom boss challenge which acts differently. Now, if you did unlock the hand for a run, I think it makes total sense! (I don't know where that is reading the hand name from though)

Do you know which mod adds that boss? At least it should display the name correctly

Thank you! It looks like I am accidentally doing this. I will check out the Galdur mod, I've never used it but I am somehow running afoul of it

Specifically Galdur has a patching mechanism to add adnimation to deck backs that I am...using...and I think I did it wrong

I will fix it for the next release, you can disable this by going to FickleFox config and disabling 'Animated Backs'

Bug fix today! Foudn that Flush Tailed fox wasn't reprocessing played flushes like it should
Also fixed a bug, Yugioh was resetting his mult after every shop. His art is supposed to reset, but not his mult, it should stay.

Hi guys, working on the v0.777 release. This is going to add some fun Final Fantasy things.

The Cait Sith joker will now unlock a Final Fantasy 7 referencing hand
Will add a new mechanic based on the number of Lucky cards you have in your deck
Add a new planet card to support leveling this new custom hand

The idea is that there will be a x / 20 chance of reprocessing Lucky cards. X is the number of lucky cards you have

And of course, the special hand will be if you play all 7's!
