Using steam deck and a controller and I can't select jokers

Using various packs of anything requires me to select a joker I cannot

When using a controller, the game brings up it's own specific button options for buy/sell but doesn't consider certain items needing to be "selected" for specific purposes.

Better example : If a booster pack gives me a card to select a joker to become negative after Xyz condition is met, I cannot actually select the joker first to use the booster card like id be able to to if I tapped it first or clicked it. Pressing A just shakes the card for a second because it probably expects me to drag the card or something.
