Alright, that does sound like the common cause for this bug yeah.
You might still be able to recover your saves from the different devices before steam syncs them if you unplug them from the internet etc

If you still care, you could use save file editors/debug mode to restore the parts of the collection you still remember but I don't think we can do anything else for you.
