Correct me if I'm misunderstanding, but isn't this the intended outcome with negative jokers? The max jokers you can have at the start is 5, so having the max jokers would show 5/5. Getting an additional joker with a negative gives you an extra joker slot, but also takes up a joker slot, so it should show 6/6 after
