So i played for a while and then the game stoped working. Its just crashing after a few secounds. There is no error message, just sound crashing, game freezing and then game closing itself. Whats wierd, the game after few days started working normally again, and now, without making any changes it start crashing again.
List of things I tried to fix it:

  • Updating and reinstalling the game
  • Verifying files via steam
  • Updating the game
  • Deleting save file
  • Allowing game to antivirus, making exception in firewall
  • Updating AMD drivers - both via AMD software and manually
  • Updating visual C++
  • Running game as an administrator
  • Running game in compatibility mode
  • Changing game priority in task manager
  • Changing game setting - game speed, video setting, g-sync, display monitor, window mode, resolution

As said, game fixed itself 2 TIMES, and then suddenly its not working again. One time it just start working, 2nd time it start working after updating graphic card drivers manually, but after like 2 days, so I wouldnt say its cause of that. I havent tried throwing myself out of the cliff, but I might consider it soon.

What are your PC specs? Do you have game installed on hdd or ssd?

If it's not about poor hdd condition, maybe there are issues with AMD drivers. If your cpu is strong enough, you can try opengl wrapper called Mesa 3d.

My specs:

  • Intel i5-4690k
  • AMD Radeon RX 6650 XT
  • 8gb ram

The game was originally installed on HDD. I moved it to SSD, sadly that didn't change anything. I tried Mesa3D. The game opened, with very limited frame rate (cause of my ancient CPU), and then closed like usually, after roughly the same amount of time.

Also UPDATE, after opening the game on my SSD, I saw that I unintentionally left it also on my HDD (I noticed it when in a search bar I typed "balatro" and saw I have like 2 copies of files.) I just clicked one in a windows search bar menu (as I checked later it was the HDD one, so without Mesa3D, which I only installed in the new SSD version), and the game just started working again. All I did was to copy the game on my SSD, running it with no success, then installing Mesa3D, and opening the game with the same result and lower frame rate, and then all of a sudden the game started working on my HDD. Idk, It's just so weird and incoherent xD One thing I noticed is that when the game "fixes" itself, which happened for the 3rd time, the icon of the game in game files is bugged - it's just blank. Also, HDD version is working, while SSD version with Mesa3D is still crashing.

Maybe there are issues with windows files? Do you have windows installed on your hdd? Because it really sounds like hdd bad sectors issue. And even while having your game installed on ssd, it cannot reach some files or data from hdd, like registry, for instance.

@random cairn I had similar problem with dying hdd. Try using sfc/ scannow through the cmd. It will try to repair any issues with windows files.

Yea, maybe is it something with Windows files, I'm not an expert. My system is installed on SSD, and I presume that the problems that you are referring to are directly related to HDD disks and the way they work. As said earlier, atm the game is working, so ill just leave it there. If the game starts crashing again - and I'm fairly sure it will - ill scan the files with the command you provided, so maybe ill have a chance to check if this solves the problem for anyone interested. Idk if it's valid information, but I'm a music producer, and lately I'm also having issues with some music plugins (Waves, FabFilter). Out of nowhere, they starter to go instantly black or just be very buggy - both in new and old projects. One time updating Visual C++ helped with that, but not for long, and now it's kinda random, one day ill check, and it is ok, another it's same thing - and both plugins and the program are installed on my SSD. So it's kinda similar imo - random bugs out of nowhere, that for me at first glance seems like bugs correlated with GPU, but apparently they are not. So for now, thank you very much for help @scarlet zenith and ill make sure to update this thread when the bug is back.

You can use cmd command chkdsk to check any errors in ssd. If you've been using your ssd for long time, it is possible that it's rewrite capacity is low and this causes problems you've described.
Also I can recommend a program called Crystal Disk Info. It allows you to check the status of hdd and ssd.

Hello hello, so the bug is back and so do I. Did nothing unusual with my pc, nor the game. Played it yesterday and today game is crashing, same way I explained in this thread.

First thing I tried was doing the same stuff I talked about earlier, so running the game on my HDD with Mesa3D, then running the SSD version without Mesa3D, but this time it didn't fix the game (well same as last time I suppose, I refuse to believe that running in on 2nd disk was the answer for that problem and fixed it back then).

#

As @scarlet zenith suggested, I used sfc/ scannow, it did found some corrupted files and repaired them, but that did not resolve the issue.

#

I scanned both of my discs with sfc /scannow and Windows found no problems in both. I also downloaded CrystalDiskInfo and from what I can see everything is ok. So as said earlier, I'm not an expert, but I guess both of the disks are alright and probably not related to the issue.

#

If I'll find something interesting or menage to fix it one more time, I'll make sure to post it there. Such a mind-boggling problem.

SOLVED: Turning off overclocking in my GPU settings fixed everything. I dont rly remember doing that, so I guess I turned it on by using keyboard shortcut or something. It fixed the problem with my VSTs in FL Studio too, yey
