A second hanafuda mod project lol. Well I'm not quite sure where I'm going exaclty with this quite yet, but at least I did something--I successfully* modified the cards base chip values. Feel free to make suggestions of possible jokers or other things

(*Not tested extensively yet, there may still be issues ofc.)

@misty spindle are you still working on this mod? also what version of the card game is this based on?

#

I'm more familiar with the korean Hwatu side of it but the Japanese version looks similar

#

It would be cool if matching ribbons, animals (godori), and stamps would give you extra chips or mult based on the real game

#

this was my existing godori card meant as a joker

misty spindle
#

I based it on the Japanese version which is indeed similar. The main difference is that November and December suits are switched (in Korean Hwatu, November is Paulownia and December is Willow, but in Japanese Hanafuda, November is Willow and December is Paulownia), otherwise all cards are the same.
I've not really worked on this since I've posted it tho ^^'

Don't know that actually--I've used the general 20, 10, 5 and 1 base values for brights, seeds, ribbons and chaff respectively. (Specific games like koi-koi will have specific scoring)

In Hwatu,
3 matching ribbons are 3 points
3 stamps are 3 points, 4 stamps are 4 points, 5 stamps are 15 points
3 birds = 5/6 points (?)

10 normal cards are 1 point, and each normal card after is one point each
5 of any ribbon is 1 point, and each ribbon card after is one point each
5 of any animal is 1 point, and each animal card after is one point each

#

there are specific exceptions, but even though its important to Hwatu itself it might be a headache to any mod enjoyers lol

misty spindle
#

Yeah these are specific to the game of go-stop I think though. Which is similar to Japanese koi-koi and is one of the games that can be played with these cards ^^

next blade
#

hwatu and go-stop are the same thing

misty spindle
#

Also the vocabulary is different, I'm guessing what you call stamps and birds are what I call brights and seeds respectively

#

No technically go-stop is the game played with hwatu cards :p

next blade
#

ah

#

my parents use those terms interchangeably

misty spindle
#

Even though there might not be other popular games in hwatu's case hence the confusion. (a similar confusion exists with hanafuda and koi-koi since a lot of people are mostly familiar with the game of koi-koi, which is actually fairly simular to go-stop)

next blade
#

also why i dont know any of the official names for anything since im only familiar with the korean terms lol

misty spindle
#

Fair enough

next blade
#

koi koi looks similar but the scoring system is a smidge different

misty spindle
#

yeah it is quite different, although I don't think I'd use the combinations' values, but rather the combinations themselves (either as additional poker hands or in synergy with new jokers)

#

and most combinations look the same

next blade
#

like we could make it more smilar to gostop/koi koi scoring

#

with any matched pairs going to a "center pile"

#

and then scoring occurring at the end of the round

#

def depends on how good your coding skills are lol

#

i can imagine the blinds are based not on chips/mult but on points like in the traditional games

#

well, points replacing chips

misty spindle
#

well I don't think I'm going as far as implementing the matching pair mechanic and neither am I replacing the chips/mult mechanic. Just like vanilla Balatro itself has very little to do with actual poker gameplay, this mod would not have much to do with actual go-stop or koi koi gameplay either, but would rather simply add a hanafuda flavor to the game. (The idea of the hybrid deck is so that everything already existing in the game remains compatible, but it's also possible to see a full hanafuda deck with exclusively hanafuda-based jokers and hands, and which would take inspiration from many hanafuda games such as koi-koi, hana-awase, hachi-hachi etc. Another possibility is also to look at kabufuda games as well for further inspiration)

next blade
#

hmm

#

maybe instead of adding cards with all of the ribbons and such

#

maybe we can replace some seals with Brights and banners?

#

and make it so scoring multiple will grant you chips/mult?

#

and animals score like your normal 3oak, 4oak, 5oak?

jolly solar
#

@next blade there have been 13-month hanafuda decks; you may wish to look into those

next blade
#

apparently there are 2 extra suits?

jolly solar
#

Matsui Tengudō made a 13-month deck and a 14-month deck

The art I made was primarily for Korean Hwatu specifically

#

but I might add 13th and 14th months as a harder to get but more powerful ranks

This sounds so interesting

one for each month

#

im. so sorry.

#

so will these be jokers? or will they be consumables

next blade
#

the idea was to make an entire new deck type with these

#

i havent gotten around to actually learning lua and brainstorming ideas

#

thats in the distant future though

next blade
# dense cypress im. so sorry.

also no need to be sorry lol this is a project i touched 8 months ago and benched because thats what happens with a lot of projects jimbOrb
