#my game constantly freezes and crashes
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
played 2 pair, game crawls to a standstill, eventually it freezes and i have to kill the process
Did the game ever work properly for you?
i don't believe so - it froze and crashed at the beginning when i first started a run
Okay none of that should be an issue
There's a year-old AMD graphics card driver that has had issues in the past. Did you notice these issues before modifying any of the video settings?
i did just update my nvidia card drivers - i can try rolling those back
I doubt that would be it but you can give it a try! You said this is the first you've played?
And you haven't been able to play a run?
it's intermittent, sometimes i'm able to play for 30 minutes at a time without a crash with no changes made to settings
any time I have to kill the process I'm getting an application hang error in event viewer which makes sense
That almost sounds like a memory leak
I deleted my save game and reinstalled - no crashes so far during the first run
Which I really doubt is actually in game since thousands of people haven't had this issue - maybe it is possible it's the video drivers?
Oh
What is your pixel art smoothing?
default i believe, should i try turning it all the way off?
No that shouldn't be it
Default should all be fine
I guess if you deleted settings yeah leave that as is
Any issues with other games today?
i don't believe so
You can also confirm if it is a memory leak - have task manager open and see what the memory for balatro does as you keep playing
correction - my pixel smoothing was still set to high. i lowered it to the default of medium and am now running the game in true full screen. no crashes yet (also i just played 5 of a kind aces for the first time, love that)
I am going to remove High as an option
I have seen a couple issues with it
And the difference isn't perceptible
ah. the game froze again. no sign of a memory leak
right as i hit play hand here
the memory dropped to 55 MB as soon as i clicked in-game to have windows kill the process though
Did you try rolling drivers back?
not yet - i will tonight in about 5-6 hours. i'll let you know how it goes!
hm - still freezing even after rolling back to the drivers i was using last week, tried disabling G-sync, V-sync, turning all the settings down as well
something very interesting is happening this time
it's very weird when this happens because the music still plays and i can even hear sparse sound effects playing as the game tries to "catch up"
Is your computer haunted by any chance?
It might be worth trying to play some other game made in the same engine (love2D) to see if this happens, but I can't think of any free ones in exe form
This problem is kind of stumping me
my PC might be haunted too yeah. i'll see if i can find another love2d game i can test
apparently i have Move or Die
i don't seem to be having any issues - i'll try to find another one
the FUNG Demo seems OK too (interesting sci-fi post apoc game about fungus being the only way to get food/energy)
I MIGHT BE ONTO SOMETHING
i have two monitors, one runs at 3440 x 1440 at 157hz at 10 bit color depth and the other is just a 2560 x 1440 at 120hz? 144hz?
i turned off the latter
no freezes or crashes yet
Oh what on earth
my main monitor isn't validated gsync-compatible however it will let me turn it on but i really only use it for intense full-screen games, but i have turned that off as well
i'm gonna try to match the refresh rates and see if that helps
they're both at 144 now
You had no issues with that 2nd monitor off right?
correct
I have a 2 monitor setup - so I wonder what exactly it is that causes it
Because I don't see that issue but I have 2 normie monitors
i had a similar issue on another PC where one monitor was 144hz and the other was 60hz, the screens would flicker like crazy if i had a game open on the main monitor and a youtube video or anything that was utilizing the GPU
APPARENTLY nvidia "fixed" it (being the flickering) in a driver update
but there's still probably weirdness going on
no freezes so far with both set to 144hz
well!
so i've done all this:
matched both monitors to 144hz
turned off Gsync entirely
turned down all the settings in Balatro
changed the .exe properties to disable full-screen optimizations
oop
game froze when i tried to do a second run
maybe it is my monitors
yes
no freezes throughout this entire run
setting the settings back to default made the game froze as soon as i exited the settings menu
let me test and see what it is that's causing that then
Thank you. I wish I could help more but I won't be able to recreate this issue on my end
I do suspect this could be somthing in my code though - maybe to do with how I am handling monitor information
it's so weird how intermittent it is. i have everything on/maxed except for pixel smoothing (that's at medium) and i'm doing one of those skip-every-blind challenges with no issues
