Literal quote for context:

I think Iโ€™m optimistic on the p(doom) scenarios, I think the underlying risk is actually pretty high, but I have a lot of faith in humanity kind of rising up to meet that moment.

Notice what he's saying: Pichai's optimism about AI safety is conditional on humanity coordinating effectively. He's not saying the risk is low. He's saying survival depends on us "getting our shit together."

This is significant because Pichai has every incentive to downplay extinction risk, yet he's publicly stating P(doom) is "pretty high" and framing survival as contingent on unprecedented coordination.

This isn't reassurance. It's a ๐œ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ญ๐จ ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง from someone who'd profit most from people not worrying about AI risk.

Separately, Lex is huffing hardcore hopeium if he believes things spinning out of control results in humans magically knowing how to coordinate to solve problems they couldn't when things were still relatively normal.
