The “Big, beautiful bill” has a provision in it that would preempt states from enforcing state-level AI laws and regulations. That means every state law about AI (past present and future) would become null and void. The bill is now in the senate, and every day this provision stays in the bill, the senate might send it to the president’s desk, meaning 10 years without ANY state AI laws.

this provision (and, I suppose, likely a handful of others) likely violates the Byrd rule since it doesn't make changes to spending or revenue (as required for budget bills). Any senator can raise a point of order about Byrd rule violations, and unless 60 senators oppose it, the Vice President Senate Parlamentarian (some person who works for the senate) decides whether to strike the provision. Now here's the interesting part - JD Vance apparently recently (~4 days ago) read "AI 2027" (a forecast from april on how AI will play out, written by AI safety experts) just a few days ago and seems to be taking its arguments seriously, even suggesting he’d really be in favor to a pause with China on AI development if AI neared AGI (He even gave a powerful sort-of-call-to-action about it!). So you have a real opportunity here.to stop this!
