“San Francisco is rapidly turning into one of the most surveilled cities in the country.”

I’m worried about this technology for a lot of reasons; mainly that it makes public spaces completely non-anonymous in ways CCTV previously was lacking. The “if you don’t have anything to hide, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about” argument is old and inauthentic as well.

Just this week, there was a shooting downtown in which nearly 30 SFPD officers stood by and allowed an armed individual to leave a controlled area, run towards tourists downtown, and take refuge in the city’s most popular and central subway station before being shot by police. I’m worried that our current police force is unwilling to do their jobs and utilizing AI to do their jobs for them, while the video beneath proves that no amount of data collection will change the values and response from police officers on the ground to actually prevent and reduce crimes.

I’m worried we’re all signing away our privacy and not even getting anything back in return. When I worked downtown, I used to use this station every single day…
