On ? Gb12 it says what stats the runes should have but not what kind the 2 or 4 set should be (energy, despair etc.)

What set should (X) monster use?
In PvE (with small exceptions** [1]**) we aim for stats > sets. This means we use whatever runes give us the best combination of stats from what we have available. Good PvE builds can involve using no sets or pointless sets simply by virtue that the sets coincidentally gives you the best stats. Here is an example of this. This is a Xiao Lin used in solo R5. This also means that when you are progressing through PvE you should not limit yourself by only allowing "DD sets" (blade, fatal, for example) to have DD stats. For example, if an energy CDMG rune drops with CRate, ATK% and you are still working through ?progression , you could roll the rune for usage on a DD.
