i came across the incredibly great ability of adobe express to animate figures via “animate from audio”. now my question: is it possible to design your own figure and have it animated by this function?

Not from Adobe Express. Adobe Express will only use pre defined puppets. But you can do your own puppets and animate them in Adobe Animate

it's the big software for that, Adobe Express is just the simplified version.
