What prompts does Chat mode use instead of Instruct mode?

I've noticed that chat mode works very well for conversation and does not generate extra dialogue outputs. However, I can't seem to instruct the model to always generate a single response as the character. The model will generate a single reply 95% of the time, but sometimes it outputs extra sets of dialogues.
