Since todays (5/3/24) patch, trading with towns no longer provides the "resource added" pop-up on the left of the screen (it DOES show the trust gain). Additionally, trades do no consistently go through, resulting in no gained goods but loss of ability to re-trade for those goods (the town's stock disappears without going into player stocks).

Additional details - i WAS trading water in the winter...which was an available option as a resource. It appears using other goods to trade DOES engage the trade but STILL doesn't provide the notificaiton
