We have faced issue of smoke coming out from center section of our viam rover. After this we removed all connection with rasberry pi and viam. Resembled it. But rasberry pi did not start when viam was connected. Can anyone help us understand what could be a hardware loss we may have in this situation and if this would be repairable?

This sounds like a short and hopefully just the buck converter - can you try powering your raspberry pi with the USBC input?
I would also disconnect anything else connected to the raspberry pi
Yes we disconnected rasberry pi completely
Also powered on rasberry pi using usbc - it worked
But when connected rasberry pi with rover’s wire it did not start up
@bright wraith could also help me understand why such short could have happened- is it due to wrong wiring or loose connections or something else?
Well it's good that your raspberry pi sounds like it is working. Most likely the buck converter shorted and blew out.
Do you have a multimeter? You can try measuring the voltage at the buck converter output to confirm this is the case.
If the wires went to 5V and another 5V line instead of GND, or GND and GND, and so on. This would create a short on the buck converter. So wrong wiring is my first guess. Buck converters are relatively cheap to acquire - where are you based? We have an open source BOM that lists where to buy a replacement in the USA.
Something like this would also work well: https://www.amazon.com/CONVOLATER-Converter-Voltage-Regulator-Transformer/dp/B09W34Y2FB?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&psc=1&smid=A1OIGOZYL4OXDK&th=1
Hi @bright wraith
Thanks for the detailed response. Buck got shorted that is confirm. We are based in India. I got new buck converter and attached it to rover. It is working - i got voltage set to 5v
This is how it looks like
Oh that's great. Can it power the raspberry pi ok?
Yes that is working now
I am trying to run rosey.py tutorial
Facing issue related to alsa and socket. Checking into it
Ok - well that's a good step forward! If you have some other software related issues I would open a new thread
Hi @bright wraith
this is Prerna Gupta. I am working with Yash on this project. We had some email threads exchanges in regards to our rover delivery last month.
We will need to open separate thread for software related issues next.
Our issue is related to ALSA lib
I will add the error details in separate thread
Great - glad you are back on track and hopefully we can assist with the next challenge!
