my friend came out to me saying (in not as many words) that her gender is Lesbian. She came to this conclusion more or less on her own and is interested in the history.

I distinctly remember reading something about Lesbians in the 60s using the term for both their sexuality and their gender, but I can't find anything about it anymore.

I see how people use it now, but a) that's not what my friend is interested in and b) I want to trace the modern usage back and compare them. If anyone could find any history on it, I already appreciate a link

I think your friends confusion has come from the fact that female is the 'only' (just going to ignore nbs for now) gender associated with lesbian. So that makes sense. Also people will have to individually message you link because we can't on the server.
