(Help would be appreciated)I cut myself. regret it kinda, I was trying to use it as a distraction without the intention of actually drawing blood, but I did it in a distressed manor and I was bleeding because it was pretty deep. I washed it and put a band-aid on it, but I won't tell them I can't handle confrontation. How do I avoid infection and like, keeping it clean to heal?

don’t keep a bandaid on for too long otherwise the wound doesn’t get enough oxygen and it gets infected. the best is to keep using the elastic wrap bandaids if you have them. they work well if you replace the bandage frequently, and take it off when showering. I also use some alcohol to clean it at times. just keep it clean and let oxygen touch the wound, from my experience
@keen cloak Here's a good article: (can't post links yet. Google clevelandclinic handling injuries from small cuts to serious wounds)
TL;DR:
0) ask yourself if the wound:
- exposes bone, organs or blood vessels
- the bleeding is severe and won’t stop even after you’ve applied pressure
- is a puncture wound of any kind
- is on your face or genitals
- is caused by an animal or human bite
Yes to any of these? Go to the ER
- wash your hands before touching the wound
- apply pressure using clean/sterile cloth or gauze until the bleeding stops
- clean the wound
- do NOT use hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol (there are disinfectants for wounds and mucous membranes)
- use warm water and mild soap AROUND the wound
- use warm water on the wound itself
- remove small debris
- see medical professionals for large debris
- apply antibiotic cream (optional, not needed for smaller wounds and scrapes)
- apply bandage/dressing (not necessary for smaller wound/scrape)
- clean the wound daily, replacing the bandage
- complicated wounds like pressure sores might need >1x daily cleanings
Go to the doctor if there's:
- increased, worsening pain
- redness that spreads around the wound or red streaks on your skin
- swelling around the wound
- the area feels hot to the touch
- pus or discharge draining from the wound
- a foul odor
- you get a fever or chills
- you feel generally unwell or sick
