Well, since he's melee you might like to roll a ranged class for variation - Mage and warlock are both accessible to gnomes and you might like those, or a hunter even. All three of those (Frost for mage) have pets to handle as well, so you'll have to keep them in mind.

So, the method of unlocking World Quests is the same in both expacs - Basically do all zone quests, by the time you're done you'll have enough rep with all of them to then unlock the WQs.
