yes "was killed" can still be seen as a neutral observation like "they were all dead" (even though the "left" kind of show this interpretation is wrong). however the french equivalent of "was killed" (furent tué) is a lot more explicit because it is always used to describe the action itself (the act of killing) while the english word is more broad and can be understand as the fact of being dead

Just by looking at the pattern, it seems they SHOULD throw out some balance changes, but we aren’t always given a heads up on them
