It would be nice if, for example, you are helping a lower level friend with questing, that you could make it so that your level is more in line with theirs, so you can quest together instead of just knocking everything down.

i could see it wreaking havoc tbh
it would be better for actually playing with a lower level friend, but might end up cheapening the experience itself because of the aforementioned mechanical creep. It's like how Timewalking, even without the optimized gear sets, gets made a tad easier because of how many more abilities and passives you have by being X level.

on ability locks, they could kinda sorta do it but with the sheer number of abilities in place, that seems a little unfeasible. Furthermore, Blizzard got pretty clever about locking on classes like DK and DH - they just set level requirements and so on.

personally I just roll an alt and bring it to level, no heirlooms when playing with the friend
it's a little tedious but with realm merges, realm coalescing, and so on, it's at least a cohesive experience
