It would be great if there was a job where a villager loads firewood, water, and food and then uses the roads to deliver the goods house to house.

The issue with more movement is that it usually asks for more things of your computer. That's also why sometimes when you arrive at one of the npc villages, that's when they start moving to do their job. It's so as much people can enjoy the game, even those with specs that are minimum.
