I was wishing for a dog in tow this week 😁 cats could also capture rodents/birds and give you little presents as you interact with them ❤️

Historycally dogs are ok, I think. But I don't know, if cats had already made it to poland in this time. Don't mistake the european wild cat for the cats we now have as pets. They are different species.

I know we had cats by that time already. But don't think it was really a popular pet. As free roaming species it should be perfectly fine then kannapeer
Dogs are a dream addiction to game though

Cats wouldn't be pets in this game, anyway. They'd be free little creatures, like Sillent said, who haunt your grain storage and keep the rodent population low. Tbh, just having them wandering around the village, or even the edges of the village, non-interactable, would be pleasant enough without any additional frills (not that I wouldn't want to be able to pet them, but it's not necessary for me personally as long as they make occasional cat noises). A real pet/working companion animal would definitely have to be a dog.

If cats had made it to poland in this time, they would have been highpriced animals: in the "sachsenspiegel" (1220 - 1230), a law text, they agreed to demand 3 pence compensation for a cat (a cow would be 4 pence, to have a comparison). Cats were pets for the gentry and income for commoners (keeping granaries clean of mice and rats - and to sell their cubs and for their fur).

That's interesting! I haven't researched it myself, so I'll defer to you. I was mostly assuming a small feral population, since cats are extremely prone to establishing one wherever they end up, but I get you.

That's why it was only some 100 years from hop to flop for them. 😦

Weren´t cats like pets for witches and a demonic pet or is that only in some parts of europe because in Belgium they threw some cats of a high tower

I found the claim somewhat hard to believe, so I looked it up
remains indicate that (pre-)neolithic farmers brought the domesticated cat to Poland as early as 8000 years ago, but at the latest they were spread throughout Europe through Roman influence
there are naturally more references of nobility or wealthy people keeping cats and dogs as pets during the medieval period, and it was rather common to include them in your portrait. Nontheless, there are still quite a few references for peasants keeping cats as well, however probably less for company and more for rodent control as already pointed out above. Pope Gregory IX (1227-1241) declared cats to be "diabolical creatures", leading to the mass extermination of cats throughout Europe, which some believe might even have contributed to the spread of the Black Death. And also established the superstition that black cats bring bad luck.

So cats definitely were a thing, but depending on the timeline they might already have had a hard time in the public eye. Which offers several quest ideas:

  1. We hear of a woman being harassed because she lives alone with a black cat, so we offer her to stay with us. She brings the cat with her of course.
  2. We hear some neighboring village is on a cat-killing frenzy, so we go over there and rescue one (or several) cat(s)
  3. our son finds a litter of abandoned cats, their mother having presumably fallen victim to a purge. we have to feed them with milk
hearty ledge
#

The game is set 1080, so some years to go until Pope Gregory IX. And so no hard time for cats yet. And I don't know, if the romans have been to poland. If cats had been in Poland for 7000 years, there would have been loads of them, because of their fast multiplication - which I doubt.

Dogs and cats are essential.

hearty ledge

Yes, I would like them, too, ingame. But that's a thing, the devs should decide, if it's possible from their point (of timeline).

frosty moat
# hearty ledge The game is set 1080, so some years to go until Pope Gregory IX. And so no hard ...

I don't remember, but was that explicitly mentioned in-game or was that just an offhand comment by the devs? The game description reads either "Europe in the middle ages" or sometimes "early middle ages", which ended around 1050. But even better, that means the kitties are still safe 😄
The Romans don't need to have gone all the way to Poland themselves. They certainly heavily influenced Germania and the Danube region though, and by extension the whole of Central Europe. I'm not making that up btw., but citing an article published in the Cambridge University Press ("The history of the domestic cat in Central Europe", 09 November 2022) that used DNA samples to trace the spread of the domestic cat. Also, I think you somewhat underestimate the extend of trade networks and migrations, which have spanned most of Europe since the Bronze Age.

Here is my Suggest (Coppied from my posts about Cats and Dogs):

Hey, so i have an idea. Just an idea that i think would be kinda cool. So we currently have Lynx and Wolves in the game. What if we could tame them. Now they wouldnt be a major increase in gameplay. But i have some ideas that could be useful for each of the pets we could get.

Dogs: Could be assigned to the hunter hut, where they increase the loot of each of the meat they obtain without increasing the maximum intensity. (Example: At 25/100 intensity of obtaining meat. Without the dog they would get [For simple math. lets say] 100 meat. But with the dog assigned would get 105 meat.)

Cats: They would increase the happiness of your civilians by 5%. But they will randomly increase one civilian happiness. (Lets say you have 5 settlers. The 5 settlers have 80%, 70%, 60%, 50%, and 40% happiness. The cat would choose at random one of the 5 settlers to boost their happiness for 5%) Also, if you have a barn, the cat would stay in the barn and chase random mice occasionally for immersion.

This is an idea i have, let me know if this would be something people are interested in. (BTW love this game)

Maybe a mode that you can activate and deactivate: Among the events it can happen that some percent of your supplies are destroyed by mice (with a cat this does not happen) and that a chicken/goose is eaten by a fox (with a dog in the village keeping watch this does not happen).

YES like a hunting dog that would go get ducks ans rabbits you kill and bring them to you.

Yaaas! Even Stray cats that eventually wander into your village that you can keep, that give a temp mood boost to those they choose to interact with. 🙂

And randomly the dog or cat will kill 1 of your chickens or ducks... Cos if they are hunters they will hunt your own animals too. Just saying that would be a good trade-off.

I'd even go with 25% chance of it happening at night and 0% with a barn worker.

i just saw the cat emoji as a comment here and had the same thought. but i would make it super simple first:
have buildings like the barn and/or the tavern which get the animal husbandy option attached and you can add 1-x cats. These simply wander or sit arround like the farm animals do. This might be really easy to implement and if the animal feed consumption is 0.0 its just like a special decoration...

The role of guard dogs and livestock dogs back then was of first importance.
Same goes for barn cats!
They are an important addition.

All of the insistence that cats were not present in Poland in 1080 AD and thus are not historically accurate glaringly ignores the very modern dialogue present in the game. Can we have a setting for a Middle English translation for those of us who can read it & era-appropriate dialogue? joy

#

But 1000000% percent YES to dogs. WE NEED RETRIEVERS IN THIS GAME! I want to shoot a duck or rabbit, then whistle to send my dog out to go get it. Please make it happen.

I think having dogs so they can help with hunt and the safety of the village would be nice. Cats would be a nice addition to have less "plage" events :3

Dogs could be a great hunting companion! Or help herd animals? Maybe even fetch sticks 😂

Cats could help with pest control or vermin. Mitigate disease in the settlement.

Hi! I'd like to add onto this wonderful suggestion about dogs being in game! They could have a kennel and be bred, added to houses like family members and they would add happiness to the family. Also they could be added to the hunting lodge like someone suggested and can help gather meat and fur. Dogs would make the game feel more real ❤️

Re the earlier point about a cat in this period belonging to a rich/noble person being valued at 3/4 the price of a cow:

That's still the case now with Rich People Cats. They'll be valued in the thousands of dollars, and yet at the same time and in the same city you can find cats for free and on the streets. The valuation put on a pet by someone with a lot of money is more helpful for knowing how much that specific person values their pet than giving any indication of average price!

#

(came here tho because hunting with a hound could be really neat)

hearty ledge
#

In early middle ages England, the value was high because cats were rare. There were (next to) non wild on the streets (yet).
But in the cause of this discussion I got convinced, that cats had been to Poland since a long time in 11th century. So everything is fine for our feline friends 😉

Maybe if the dog could bark if there's a wolf/wild pig/bear near you because often i find myself in a situation where i hear an angry pig/wolf/bear and it is already too late to run so i have to take out a weapon and fight the animal/s and when there's 3 wolves atacking you at the same time you have almost no chance to make it out alive. You would have to hit every shot/hit with your weapon.

That would be nice. I’d love to have a dog that helps a little in hunting.

But to help with being surrounded, always be on the move and try sidestepping or jumping over enemies or making use of terrain. Additionally, maybe have a few spears handy for an initial throw or two before switching to your best axe when they come close. You’ll usually have the chance to do so even when “ambushed”. And obviously, when the armor update comes out, that’ll help a lot too.

Note: sidestepping and constant repositioning is not only easier but much more efficient and consistent with bandits than with wild animals but should still be considered

An orange cat that hangs around the barn or walks around the village, making sure your rat population is low, meows time to time. Maybe you’ll see it hanging around your house. I think an option to scare it off would satisfy the players who don’t like cats

lol I bet, every player who doesn't like cats, would kill them on sight 😛 - so shooing them off isn't really needed.

(But would be a "nice to have" nevertheless.)

I just recently started playing the game, having so much funs, and this is honestly my first post here in the Discord~ 👋 Like just thought of this today and saw I wasn't the only one~ I guess I'm bumping this post 'cause I'd LOVE to have cats and dogs.

Cats and dogs to hunt(Cats can hunt birds for meat and feathers, like animations of them trying to hunt birds or something. Dogs hunt like foxes and/or to get like fur and meat, would be cutes to see them chase after foxes and rabbits), make bowls(clay and/or wooden) for them for foods, build like houses for them and/or beds inside your own house.

They can breed(3 max litter, could be random from 1 to 3 per possible season) as well and you can sell them for monies, I know some cats and dogs can have more in RL but game limitations and all I'm thinking.

Can make like a special travelling NPC to purchase them(probably have like maybe a good variety of different coloured kitties like tabby, orange, black and etc. Same with puppers too) and/or adopt them in the wild. IDK. Another NPC, or reusing the doctor haircutter person, to fix/neuter them IF you don't want to breed them.

Their life age can be like 20 max years with a chance to die after 15 years, my own RL cat died at like 21 years old many years ago and another at 18 years old so the ages pretty realistic.

Oh and of course, we all want to pet the kitties and the puppers. Hell I'd love to pet my chickens, piggies, horsies and all the other animals 'cause animal lover. LOL Gotta pet all the animals~ ❤️

There also someone in this post that mentioned happiness as well, that'd be cutes that they add the ambience of your village~! 🎉 I mean they do in RL. LOL

And another suggestion I saw here that was super cute was the puppers being assigned to hunters, extra possible meat. Good puppers having jobs. Kitties being assigned to barns to possibly get extra meat. Give them cute little jobs.

Oh this would be great~ Sorry for nerco-ing/bumping this old post.

Adding pets as companions for hunting is a bit ambitious for the scale of this game. My suggestions are:

  1. Random cats & dogs spawning around the map and if we can find, we can recruit them like a villager (easter eggs).
  2. Add pet house as a new building to accommodate the pets.
  3. Pets will freely roam the village (within a limited range from their assigned house).
  4. They also have an average life span and will eventually die.
  5. Optional: they can be assigned to a hunting log, fishing hut, herbalist hut to increase production output.

Was gonna make a suggestion myself for this, but found this one! Here were my thoughts--some may have been repeated above, so consider it an agreement XD

  • Add dogs and cats
  • Cats can be assigned to live/stay around production/storage areas (kitchen, barn, resource), to hunt rats and birds. Or just free-roam the village, doing the same.
  • Dogs could be a bit more complicated. Companion is great, but would love for them warn around dangers in the distant (red animals or bandits).
  • Dogs being able to help hunt would be great, but I can see where that would be a lot to do.
  • Dogs randomly hunting/chasing rabbits, birds, and rats.
  • Dogs can be assigned to a house or to a player?
  • The ability to pet both is very important. 😂

The lynxes in game don't seem to cause much trouble if not aggravated. It would be fun if they could be tamed and brought to the village to be like the village pet. haha. But yeah, I like the idea of adding pet dogs too.

Would be awesome to have dogs follow you around, maybe bark or whine when you're approaching hostile animals or bandits.

I'd love to have cats roam the village, sometimes leaving a small bird corpse lying around (at a house doorstep maybe) or a rat corpse that you could harvest.

Great idea! Maybe add a learning system to make it more immersive. You can teach him commands, and it takes time to learn. Plus, the dog can capture our hunting prey, like ducks, for example. Having a variety of dog breeds would also be great. You could also have a loyalty system. The more you take good care of him, the more loyal he'll be. He can also help in battles by biting enemies' legs or arms, distracting them while we deal with the others.

havent really read all the posts, but this is a great idea, have a dog on a hunt, they can fetch arrows, birds, hare and other small pray that is killed. they can warn for danger (wolf, boar, bear, bandits), and steer/manage deer, elk and other large game to make them run to you for easy kills. like a real hunting dog is doing.. add a new building, "pound" where you can train dogs to to get new skills as fetch, mark/track and toplvl to manage/scare game to you.

I would love to be able to have dogs as a companion while hunting and help guard the village and/or Live stock.

I know cats are debatable as 'pets' were not really a thing back then everyone animal you had had a job so to speak. Cats in the early ages were 'pest control' they kept unwanted small critters away ie rats and mice in barns, ships and jails.

Either way I'd still love to be able to have cats wondering around my village near the barn. 😦

I love this idea, maybe add a level 4 upgrade to the hunters lodge to add 2 dogs to the lodhe for the hunters to take out hunting with them.

#

adding a decoration like a rug to homes for a dog or a cat to sleep on so each hose can own a pet.

#

Or adding a area in the storehouse for a Cat to be added to keep rats awa.

Actually, I think I made a suggestion post a while back about dogs and cats being available as companions for players or villagers. In my opinion, to keep the ‘survival’ feeling of the game, they could be implemented by a season-change event, in which a baby wolf or lynx would be found on the doorstep of the player’s home, at which point they would have to choose to kill it, leave it outside, or take it into the home. I’d personally love to have a wolf as a pet, and a lynx would be pretty cool too. Plus, even though it’s not as realistic as domesticated dogs, I’d say it’s still in the realm of possibility given there are a few other unrealistic-yet-semi-plausible things in the game, like herbal potions. 🤷‍♂️

#

Maybe having a wolf pet would scare other wolves away, or a lynx would bring small gifts in the morning if the player sleeps, like feathers and furs.
