#Boat and Pier

This could even be an upgrade to the fishing hut, with a fishing boat that the NPCs use, rather than wading into the river.
and maybe you could add bridges
And then maybe the player can travel off map to another place on quests or visits to the king...
Could be a way to get to the new co-op mode map...
Could make it have a removable mast for going under bridges like the longship in ac valhalla
The Pier could give BONUS to trading or allow something trade related
and fishig boats
Bump
Love this idea, fishing in the middle of a lake, overlooking my village, or simply seeing villages on boats in the water would be such a nice touch
One of my few sad moments in MD. "Where Is my fisherman?"
That point in the middle of lake is his had 🤦
Pier as a workplace for fisherman (part of his hut) would be nice
I would propose going further and creating not just a pier but a harbor with all port infrastructure to create, store, repair and equip as well dugout boats as more advanced river ships
i too would also like boats for fishing/travel, and an upgrade to give boats their own storage chest would be cool too.
I like the idea of a special pier you could build; and on certain days, a special "maritime trader" would visit — offering special items, and a LOT of cash on hand, for trading.
Wondering how you guys wanna implement this: there aren't any animations for swimming neither is the water deep enough for boats? I mean the character just walks trough water
@river parcel I would think (at least initially) it could be restricted to water deep enough to "bathe" in
So... the larger riverways.
Thats still not deep enough for a boat
Yes it is ... depending on the type of boat.
I never reached an area where the character isn't able to walk
Galleons? Not so much... and small skiff? Sure.
That's because there isn't any.
Yes and thats the reason why i think this wouldn't work pretty well
Maybe we're thinking about different boats.
Why should you use an boat if you just can walk there🤔 those small boats wouldn't be faster as walking i suppose lol
Well its medieval, what else if not fisher boats?
I was assuming just a rowboat. Could be fun to fish on.
Yep. Or a small skiff. Something era-specific
Sounds kinda non sense to me tbh
Dunno could make sense on a new map with small islands, each other only reachable trough boat
IDK we have three entire skill points we can dedicate to swimming, which is also useless if you walk everywhere. Imo giving people options on how to navigate their environment is never useless!
@honest hare Are you talking about water dancer?
I think so yes
That just lets you "wade" faster though.
Yeah XD but what I'm saying is that all the people saying boats are useless are saying they're useless because you can get everywhere without going in the water. Yet we have three perk points about navigating in the water, so maybe water navigation shouldn't be written off just because it's optional!
Horses are useless.... the player already has legs.
Having options is a lot of what I like about this game XD I COULD feed my village entirely on roast meat but I like to have tons of options!
Yarp. Options.
Exactly hahaha
Where should you use this boat lets be honest
Now I think a valid complication point is "well what if someone tries to row right off a waterfall" to which I say "let them if the water is wide enough, and give them a non standard death for that char and a memorial site is erected beside the waterfall almost like an achievement because that's incredibly funny"
On... Rivers that are wide enough? It's just another transport option
Well, show some then dunno 😅 i can't remember to any water location which could fit an boat tbh
It's also a potential set-piece for NPCs, bandits, random travelers or traders, et cetera.
I see! I think you're picturing a whole ship
shoulder-depth water is deep enough for a boat
waist-depth water is deep enough for a boat
Yes but still: where would u use it? There are just some small rivers and small lakes
Basically all of those
Did you guys noticed the lake/river in those videos and the water in the game?
Did you notice the draft depth of the boats we posted?
Sure! But where is that much space in the game? You can literally jump over rivers ingame
Both maps are intersected by multiple rivers I'm confused where you're confused
@river parcel Maybe play the game more?
Well i stillt think it wouldn't fit with the game 🤷🏻
As I said from the very beginning... if the water is deep enough to bathe in ... it's deep enough for a boat.
Since walking into rivers to bathe is also a functional aspect of the game ... there's plenty of water for boating.
Someone send the maps and say "the areas in blue" lol I'm at work and can't
They should just make an viking game with another team or something lol. I mean something with focus on boats and stuff.
Guess they have still much to do with npc animations and so on anyway lol
Nah my solution is: let it be lmao
Well... no.
Unless you can actually provide a valid counterpoint...
- water isn't deep enough (totally false)
- not enough water (also totally false)
- can't remember any water location that could fit a boat (apparently doesn't know boats come in different sizes)
- it wouldn't fit with the game (again, totally false ... boats were a thing in 12th Century Poland)
Nobody is forcing you to use a boat, just like nobody is forcing you to use a donkey, or a horse, or a stamina potion.
It's... an... OPTION.
One way of moving goods was to use a towingship (? - hope that's the correct term in english. In german we say "treideln"), were a small boat was pulled by animals or most often by humans on a path by the riverside:
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treideln
On the river Rhine it was used since the 8th century, but I don't know about Poland...
@wintry obsidian There were Norse and Slavic boat designs around that time too.
Some of the earliest were dugout canoe types (a.k.a. monoxyl)
Which, as you can see, had a very shallow draft, so ideal for shallow rivers and tributaries.
In my opinion, there should be different boat variants...
I like the concept of "Boat and Pier"...

yes. even if not useable. would love to be able to build a mini port. then i could build market stalls on it or right beside it🤣
also the depth of water means nothing. .. viking longships could sail up even the shallowest of rivers or up onto the shallowest of beaches then be pushed right back out to the deeper water/ocean.
so yes. you can’t build giant warships like the ones with cannons. but you could easily build early medevil style ships and longship styles
Even if the villagers use them too… maybe it could extend the range of production bonuses for the upgraded fishing hut.
I'd love to use my fishing spear or be able to cast a fishing net off a little boat, or see one of my fishing villagers out there doing it.
Even if they start small with mostly aestitic boats, it'd be a great start 🙂
I don't think any sailing boat would make sense when talking about river navigation. I would rather support a small rowboat, maybe a larger ornate one for end game players
a thought I just had after reading this was the developers would probably have to make some changes to the existing bridges cause theres no drawbridges for boats
you'd probably need drawbridges for bridges you build if you wanted to go through one with a boat
As we have no ocean or really big lakes, sailing boats don't make sense. But flat bottom boats that are rowed or staked (hope, that is the correct english term) with a pole would. (And I would love those boats, even if they were just decoration and not functional).
would really love some boat to use to sail on water!
I think a small single-sailed boat would be an appropriate late-game option and a simple raft would do nicely early on (maybe just some logs and sticks for the recipe and be located survival technology)
