for now my assumption is, that since its only the config file that got messed up (that should be a file size of mear kb) they should be able to just copy the old backup config into the folder and just overwrite it

AS LONG as the backup file includes the config

but even if not you SHOULD be able to just get a default config file and overwrite your old one and just redo your settings

Don't worry, some servers have been down since yesterday, mine since 9 a.m. This is the answer from support:

There are currently technical problems with the hardware. Our technicians are already working on a solution to the problem so that your server can function as usual again as quickly as possible. We apologize for the outage.
