#Is there a trick to making BodyFP
1 messages ยท Page 1 of 1 (latest)
To broadly summarize, it's a mix of
- The right source samples
- Fine-tuned saturation/distortion
- Very controlled clipping to get the initial rough "edge" without turning it into a noisefest
Ok nice, thank you, this technical stuff is still very new to me! For the source samples, I understand now why using a sample that already is noisy is not going to work. What could I use instead? Would I look for something like a simple clean slap or even a wood impact/hit to then post-process? Lastly, is it generally good practice to run the bodyFP samples through a limiter before I export from my DAW to enfusion? I can see that your samples sound much louder and have a much better presence in the final mix than mine even though mine are technically louder which I'm guessing has to do with more aggressive compression?
@quartz fable is our resident expert in punchy bodies and made those found in the game, so he might have some more input.
From my own experience, the best sources are clean recordings with a high dynamic range and a bit of low-end, as they leave the most opportunity to be shaped. ๐
As for limiting:
- With some caveats, a clipper will usually "limit" the sound as it is basically "cutting it off" above a certain amplitude. Putting a limiter after might lose you the hard edge gained from clipping again.
- View a limiter not only as a safeguard from digital clipping, but also as a tool, if that makes sense. It allows you to safely narrow down the dynamic range, lots of use cases ๐
Love that you dive so deep into sound design, dude!
Thank you, this is very helpful! I will take this to heart and do some more testing with limiters and clipping! The more I look into this stuff the more appreciation I gain for the work and expertise you and the other sound people at BI have poured into this game. Thanks again! ๐ซก
@hollow halo wanna do a deal?
You share your close gunshot recording sample you wanna use, we set up a call, using REAPER (THE DAW for Game Audio) I'll walk you through making it into a Chad sausage of a transient. I talk, you execute. We record the whole thing. Profit.
Until then, have fun EQing, compressing, doing the basics. Feel invited to use AI for "learning/researching". You'll get better over time.
The devil will be in the details but it will be a blast one way or another. It's guns bro. ๐โค๏ธ
Frequencies have their reasons for being there and they have different jobs. I love how you figured out that seperating them on the timeline works. ๐ง
