//INTRODUCTION
Embark on a journey to the frozen cold regions of Novka, an abandoned world. Endure the wildlands from the highest mountain belt peaks, to the lowest frozen sea plains and the harsh dynamic weathers. Become an expert and terrain specialist in these unique regions. Welcome to Novka, a specialized map design set in snow and ice. This project features several different systems that provide an unique experience like no other.


//FEATURES
- Realistic World & NatureExplore a world designed to immerse you in the stunning realism of snow-covered majestic mountains, wild forests, and endless frozen plains.

- Northern LightsWalk beneath the Aurora Borealis and gaze at the magnificent show that unfolds every night.

- Dynamic Snow MechanicsWhen it snows, it really snows! A custom WeatherState system dynamically adds snow particles and increasing snow coverage over time — blanketing mountains, ground, and roads with realistic accumulation.

- Tunnel Passe & Bridge DestructionsThere are four tunnel passes (through the mountains) and five bridges that connects the regions. Any part of the tunnels can be destroyed. However bridges have special marked parts (the bridges part with a red flag, can be destroyed). All roads are connected but destroying a strategic tunnel or bridge can help you buy time/supplies or slow down enemy progress but be careful, this can backfire later on, if the tides turn.

- GM & Conflict mode orientatedThis map was mainly designed for Conflict mode, the regions can be divided into two main areas, North against South side. Base placement, control points, supply depots, bridges and tunnels have all been carefully placed in accordance to map layout and balancing. However this is not limited to Conflict only, many POI's and cities are created for immersive mission building.

//BEHIND RED LINES (MISSION)
Try the small mission "BEHIND RED LINES", this mission features a military sabotage scenario, where you move into enemey lines to sabotage their supplylines.
Note that the mission itself is small and simple, but hopefully more advanced, longer and complex missions will be made in the future.

//MAP DEVELOPMENT
To acheive this projects main and internal goals, a pre-dummy map for testing was made, alot of specilized tools and methods was created to make rapid mountains, nature and the frozenplanes inside the Enfusion Engine. This is my first mod on Arma Reforger, but not my last. Future plans are being made for releasing the tools used here and other more useful mapping tools for the terrain modding community. The Novka project was created on 16-05-25 in regards to the MANW 2025 contest.

  • 4 Supply caches & and supplies spread over the map

I dont know if they are working on it for reforger or arma 4 but there are some debug options you can turn on to make everything covered by different material which I assume is going to be used for snow, with variable intensity

There are also snow particles and some other references, but again, just speculation

Probably fastest to fix by:

  1. Inheriting from all overridden resources
  2. Copying the override properites using a text editor and pasting them into the inheriting file
  3. Copying the GUID of the original and new resource from the meta files and using something like NP++ to bulk replace all menions of it across the entire project
  4. Deleting the override
    If many resources are affected, that's definitely less tedious than doing it manually.

Noticed a potential issue with a few of your weather state transitions...
Clear weather state has two transitions, both set to 1, I think this will confuse the automated weather system.
Rain weather state has two transitions, Cloudy set to 1, Overcast set to 0, so automated weather will always transition to Cloudy.

Regarding weather states in general, it would be nice to see some more variations, specifically wind related.
Would be nice to see some calmer winds as all current weather states are very windy.

you can find the items causing the issue in client log, usually its an item that is usable (medical stuff, helmets, etc) so battleye thinks the player spawns it when the player gets into network range of the item, causing the player to get kicked

Actually, doesn't seem to work properly, as it doesn't use the base game gamemat for snow... Are you aware that the game already has a gamemat for snow? Would make more sense to override or inherit from that one: Common/Materials/Game/snow.gamemat.

It's rather difficult to identify surfaces. The avalanche mod currently checks if the first blast resource is Blast_tiny_snow.ptc to identify snow, but your gamemat uses the dirt particle effects instead.

Status: PS5 Consol player issues

  • TO SERVER OWNERS: Ive been getting reports that PS5 players are dropping heavy on FPS, too a point they get kicked from playing. Im unsure what causes this ATM but if you have any info or ideas, please let me know.

Future coming updates:

Main issues:

  • Currently the focus is on bugs and issues:
  • Overriden objects and materials (will affect third party maps if in a map pool) - Since the map was made nearly only by using overrides, its a long tedious task to get done, so this is gonna take some time.

Minor issues:

  • Change Dirt.Gamemat to Snow.Gamemat
  • Some object can be destroyed which shouldnt
  • "Barbwire" mountains affects the ground near the boarders
  • Fix WeatherState issues
  • Fix Trees on the road on the northeast side
  • Check relay station for bugs (descripter module)
  • Fix Ireska backside
  • Fix Mountain on southern base (low poly model)
  • Fix Snowclutter issues

Imma be outta town over the weekend and back monday. Ill be checkin in on my phone but cant push any updates for now. Hopefully I can get some of the list stuff done next week!

Lastly, a massive thanks to everyone for welcoming this project - Ive never expected this to become so big so fast and an extra thanks to anyone giving their time and knowledge to help out. Cant express the feeling for all this, thanks alot.

Hi! We tried to hold events on your map, unfortunately many players complain that FPS drops at some points from 100+ to 5-20.

Perhaps in the future (not on this map) it is worth abandoning such a number of effects, or trying to make this type of map.

It seem somewhere along the lines of development that gamemat was duplicated and the particle effects were changed. I apologize for making such a big issue of this. The individuals that can replicate it had my map installed also. .

Small bug reports:

  1. Destroyed lights in bunker stay luminous, this could be fixed by manually removing LightEntity via subscribing to GetOnDamageStateChanged damage manager event of parent entity that holds light entity in hierarchy and then manually delete the light entity in the owner hierarchy
  2. MusicManager prefab is already present in basic world, so, for example, if you need to use different music manager in your scenario, you wouldn't be able to do it. This could be solved by moving music manager from base world to it's specific conflict and GM subworlds/subscenes

Looks amazing. The custom scripts are insane. I only wish the map was bigger so I'd have more to enjoy. If I could offer one comment though after having run across the map, some sections feel a little squeezed into too tight a space. For example, while the harbor is large and looks great, its squished behind a very steep hill and has little water area (both in depth and width). Keep up the good work

Awesome map, its so atmospheric! Taking a hike on this map is already enough for me to have fun^^

Found an issue, that i cant figure out on my own. I created a mission in the workbench for my unit and placed a few more prefabs. Still learning the workbench^^ but in my understanding i now have to add override navmesh files for the areas, to make those objects "known" to the AI. Worked really well on other maps. On Novka i cant do it, because the SCR_AiWorld Component is currently included in the worlds base layer (and there can only ever be one as far as i know). In my opinion its something that has to be fixed with the map -> i can think of two ways: the SCR_AiWorld Component has to be moved out of world layers into the maps mission layers, so it can be added and configured in new missions if needed as well. Another way could be to add a NavmeshFile Config, like "Navmesh_GM_Arland_Soldier.conf" as default, put that into the worlds SCR_AiWorld Component and now as mission creator i can override that file and add my own navmesh files. Im no map-modder, so i dont really have a clue, but i think that something needs to be done to allow other creators to override the navmesh of your map. Maybe i am completely wrong, i am happy to learn something new 😉

Thank you for that workaround, tried it, but i can only get it to work for the "LowRes" and "BTR" part of the navmesh. I cant get it to work for the "Soldiers" part. I think i know the reason, but it´s really weird: on Novka the basegames SCR_AiWorld prefab is being used, so i am overriding that one. For some reason i first need to add the class for the "Navmesh File Config" in "Soldiers" NavmeshWorldComponent (i dont have to do that for BTR and LowRes), because in the Reforgers base SCR_AiWorld there is no class configured (see screenshot). Which means, Kaffeina had to do that as well, but he did it right in the maps base layer. Which means, i cant override it: because even if i override the base game SCR_AiWorld and make my changes, his in the worlds layer is overriding mine again^^ I hope that makes sense. Sorry for the offtopic, but if my assumption is right, then additionally to moving it into the missions layers, it would also be better for Kaffeina to create his own instance of the SCR_AiWorld prefab, to make it even easier to edit for others.

My theory is that pc has a higher limit then Xbox and PS5 - which is causing issues for them - so reducing the numbers should fix it?

Hey Kaffeina, was curious about the new update and wanted it to test it to give some feedback.
I am getting JIP ERRORs and obv. this is a issue on my end with the modpacks and Novka map combi but the older version works fine. Think something is conflicting and I may be the only one having this now. Havent digged far enough in the loggings what it is exactly but thought you may wanna know

If you have the WCS weapons mod on you don’t need the scar’s, the weapon mod has them in there. If you have both it’ll cause issues @pure sequoia

Have you placed any new props? Sometimes that error is from a server thinking a player spawned an item without authorization. So placing usable items on the base terrain is usually the culprit

This is another performance patch with alot of positive results (from internal testing), from personal testing my own FPS is being raised by around 10-15 FPS.

Yes it has been getting multiple patch fixes. And more is coming 🤘
Ive been on the clutch servers running with 128 players, was running well and the owner saids it runs as intended.

I would love to get more feedback on this however so if any of you guys ever run it again. Ill be more then happy to help and fix stuff. @gloomy needle @wary holly

7950X3D will work better assuming you have full hardware access, not using a VPS or a VM or the like, need unrestricted access to 6 cores

Just to be clear, 7950X3D is also too slow for 128 player servers. So is 9950X3D. There actually isn't a CPU fast enough right now.

Can you give us a little more detail on “near future”, as of now the current state on most modes, whether it’s your conflict mode, escapist mode, or other PvE modes, FPS dropping to 2 fps shown in one of my previous post still exists. It’s crashed the server several times and had to stop running it. Absolutely love the detail and would live to be able to play it past the first two bases before it crashes.

Okay firstly, Escapist and Novka PvE mods aren't my mods so I cant comment on those.
Secondly, you're really not giving me any information to run on here to help:
What system do you run this on, Pc, Xbox or PS5? I don't know your mod setup or your server specs, you might just be tanking the server with an overload of mods and AIs- Which wouldn't be fair to then blame the map if that is the case.

Have you tried running the server without any other mod and checking out the avg. FPS before adding other mods? Because this seems more like an setup or hardware issue then the "current" state 🤔

I’ve tried running without any mods and the same issues are still happening. Even using GM bare bone map is causing fps in the teens especially when facing the sun or standing on a ridge line. As far as escapist and PvE modes, I understand that is out of your control. The mods we do use have been carefully gone through to make sure the server stays at peek performance. If we see an issue we pull the mod until the problem has been resolved. I test everything on my test server with the same specs seen below before moving it to my main server.

We play on other maps that are larger and more dense like ones created by Temppa with some bases having upwards of 100 Ai to battle with FPS on consoles never dropping below 50.

I’m on PS5 Pro, with others on XBOX and PC, experiencing the same issues with frame drops

Server specs:
Extreme 5.7 GHz 9950X + DDR5
64 GB Ram
NVMe 14,000MB (Extreme Performance)
Realtime CPU priority
+20% Clock Boost ++++

The ping for most of the players on my server are from 15-30 ms.

I can always load it on my test server and run test for you and send you any log you need to help with diagnosing.

This is another performance patch for Novka, this patch increases performance with around 15-20 FPS - this should help with AI amount and other mods.
Besides the performance fixes, more details have been added to some cities. This is the start of my "Backyard update" but since Ive had alot of positive FPS performance results, im releasing early.

This is yet another performance patch for Novka - This patch also adds some heavy adjustments to the WeatherState system - adding HazyFog and other adjustments

Yes sir, I’m on the latest version. I’m on PS5 so auto exposure isn’t an option as far as I’ve found. I’ll take some screenshots later today that show how visually it’s white washed and horizontal snow vortex’s. Maybe it’s just my OCD but for a snow map, the depth seems disproportionate due to the sky not having any blue during clear skies.

I did see a frame increase as long as the battle stays on foot, but as soon as explosions, use of air or ground vehicles, the frames drop considerably. Once buildings start getting destroyed there’s additional frame loss.

I'm on PC. usually the perf is decent but as soon as we reach ~25 players with ~80 AIs in a city the fps tends to drop by quite a bit.

I know your question is for Hideout, but we play mostly Tempaa Maps (Anizay-Gogland-Ruha) and PS5/Xbox never drops below 50 FPS and PC never below 120. That’s with 10-15 players with 3 CP’s active and 80-120 Ai active across 18-20 groups. Also, with multiple helicopters up and ground vehicles fighting and blowing stuff up.

This is another heavy FPS performance patch. Reducing alot of numbers here and there to increase FPS - My personal results have been high - from Mt. M. Spanel the fps was at 49 when looking over the landscape and now im running it at 80 FPS (note not all areas act the same with the FPS consistency).

NOVKA ROADMAP

  • This is the current roadmap for the development of the Novka project. I not adding in deadlines or ETA's on the development since its a solo project and the upcoming 1.0.17v is set to release soon. The plan is to release the newest version and get feedback and do bugfixes (if necessary) before going into the Expansion of the map. Once I start on development, ill keep a legacy map and if ppl want it later on, ill consider releasing the legacy as a separate mod.

  • Once 1.0.17v is stable and been running for a while without issues, pretesting will begin - Pretesting will be an experimental testing of how to do the expansion in an optimal way and without reducing quality or performance.

  • Novka is currently an 2.8x2.8 km map, the expansion is set to double the size to 2.8x5.6 km (7.8 km2 to 15.6 km2)

  • The expansion will take inspiration from the northern parts of Norway and consist of alot of interconnected islands and larger mountains surrounding them.

MAJOR UPDATE

This is an milestone update (biggest update so far), containing new global snow layers, new overhauled snow rain, a ton of bug fixes and a added coral reef! This update adds more detailed snow coverage on mountains and on the rock terrains aswell as a water overhaul.
This is the "last" update for Novka, for now Ill only update if necessary (if there is critical bugs with this update) - Now the expansion development will start!

@storm current, just wanted to give you a heads up that the Arora isn't visable to consoles. Our guys on PC see it but we can't. Is this something you are aware of?

Everyone on my server. I even had them join my test server with no mods. Only PC could see them. I didn’t have anyone on Xbox at the time so I couldn’t tell you if it’s working for it. On PlayStation we see light changes reflecting off the snow, but nothing in the sky.

Is the aurora an entity? It might be too far for consoles. Their object render distance is limited

Since the release of the map, I've never seen the aurora, and in one of his updates he did move it further. but again I've never seen it.

what i was saying is that Binos will normally render objects at further distances on console. I tried using binos to see if i could get the aurora to render and that didn't work. I'm testing render distance right now to give you.

so i placed a barrel down, which should be a static entity renders in at 245 meters with binos and without binos it will render in at 145 meters.

larger items like a container is viewable at 1585 meters with bino and without binos 1095 meters

is there a better static entity that I could use that would be more like the aurora?

what kind of entity are the stars? they seem to render just fine. could the Aurora be set to the same entity type of entity layer to allow it to be viewable?

Hey Kaffeina, will you be using any of the new assets like the ship wrecks, industrial equipment, mines, etc etc for the map, theres lots of potential for some new POI’s like some frozen mines, ship wrecks on the shore and maybe even some frozen into the ice sheets would be kinda cool

Nokva still overrides the following resources, which affects other terrains:

  • DistantRain_Drops_Mask.edds, you can make this an independent texture and reference it in the custom rain material you already have
  • Environment_Waterfall_Large.acp, you already have a custom _Novka version so the override should not be needed if you replace the remaining reference(s) to the vanilla acp in the dam layer
  • Environment_Ambients_2D.acp, this can be a duplicate referenced in your ambient sounds prefab
  • Several overrides to vanilla materials which should be replaced by inheriting versions: House_Village_E_1I06_ext_roof_White.emat, House_Village_E_1I04_roof.emat, MountainGrass_01.emat, Road_Asphalt_E_01_DashedLine.emat, Road_Asphalt_E_01_DashedLine_End.emat, Road_Asphalt_E_03.emat, Road_Dirt_02.emat, Road_Forest_01.emat

Sorry the long absence. I had some personal issues and also had to complete my finals for my education at the same time (stressfull stuff tbh)

But im booting slowly up again, and have some nice projects in the works, including Novka (which is a bit on a pause currently)

thoughts on removing this aurora reflection effect from the ice? i assume it's a holdover from when the aurora was more overt, i think it detracts from how cool the ice looks at night
