This will the Progress thread for my Map based on Fårö (Faaroe) (Sheep Island) in sweden.long/Lat N 57.933/E 19.150 Height is raised around 300% over the Island. Map Size 25x25km. Road net work and most of the forest locations are from the Map. All locations is more or less fictional for buildings and I used my creative sense to build up a gaming environment.

This is how it look after edit, added a lot of green to it and over painted most white spots (Caravans) that caused the grass to go white

You can export the heightmap as a png, I used that to get all the water surface, increased it size to same as my Satmap, put it in as a layer over my Sat Map in Gimp, used a "wizard" marker with option narrowed down to 1 color ,selected the 0 heightcolor on the layer, turned off the layer and added a new layer, the selection marking is still active, filled the marking with the blue you see on the normal satmap. Save it as a gimp workfile, Flattend it with the new blue water without any disturbance that was on the original Map. Exported as PNG. Imported in Game. For the green I just added a layer of Green and changed the opacity to something that I thought would work, still need some adjustment. During the time when I created a lot of roads I used the lighter Map to see the roads more clearly. Now with most of them done and I do more detailed editing The green layered one works better. Your background map can be anything really. You can add a completely black picture and everything will get really dark since the textures has a bleed thru from the background and you limited to 5 layers / square using the blending with sat-map gives you much more colors and variations on the same texture. Quite brilliant really.
Image size, my map size is exported from Qgis at 25x25 km, this gave me a 25000x25000px size, however the game made the area from the heightmap 24769x24679 ... So I resized my map to that size to have a perfect match
The heightmap when exported is 12545 x 12545... witch is the Size of Everon if I remember correct.
I resized a copy of my satmap to this size and imported it, no issues everything was where it supposed to be just that when zooming out and you see the satmap the resolution was lower.. as expected. So I tried a map with half that resolution, still worked and all in place, now when zoomed out the resolution was crap when the background became visible. Use the resolution for the size imported is my suggestion.
