Making it into thread because im suure will be a bit of back and forth So im starting to understand it a little bit, but still trying to wrap my head around the benefit, but again, im seeing it a little bit. For example, this road is a circular road, little bumpy, i could smooth it out alot, but trying this baking thing. When I adjust height, then bake, then turn off adjust height, its bumpy again.

#

adjust height turn off, no bake

#

adjust height, then baked

#

turned off after bake

So i still have to smooth it out before doing it all?

#

With just adjust height, and leaving it on, i dont have to smooth it all out necceisary

Do you have any road or house close that ghas adjust height on?

mental imp
#

Yeah , let me fix that

vocal vigil
#

With nothing interfere it should stay smooth

mental imp
#

yup i think that was my problem i forgot to change them in that area

🙂

#

I only uses the adjust to height mao for my main roads in the start, now if I need to use it on a road, start a bit out from the road you connect from, stop a bit short to where you go, check along the road see if there is any curves etc that need to be fixed, -bake if all looks good, make the final connection with adjust to height map (Lets short this to ATHM) 🙂 , smooth out eventual bumps... done

#

This was one tricky one 🙂

#

And tiny bumps is just natural... 🙂 I usally do some test driving in the russian civil car, if it can handle it ok no other car will even notice it

#

From other road

#

As I wrote in a earlier post using stumps is also a good way. You just do a short piece out from the road, make sure it's smooth either with or with out ATHM then you merge the connecting road to it.

#

If ATHM on the stump, bake it before merge

okay. its going to definetly take some more messing around, but im liking it so far

The roads in this town I made it easy, flattend the whole area, only the main road thru town was baked.

mental imp
#

That looks really good. Im defintely going to be trying it so more

#

thank you for being so patient and explaining it

As you saw after the second bake (dirt road) you had some dirt popping up thru the main, this disappeared as soon as you turned off the ATHM on the dirt road. Released the tension so to speak

#

This is caused of the fall off and the Falloff start width, it not only goes to the sides it also apply forward/backward from the last vector

This area I decided for a town will come with some challenges to get the roads smooth.

#

You can see how I leveled off quite a bit before the connection, this helps a lot if you have the space to do it

Now I need to find out where to continue this river

#

Saw you video about slowing down the river, this should really be a slow slow river, it comes from a water treatment site

#

same river starts in the water treatment pool

mental imp
#

Very cool. Yeah i was pretty happy when i found how to slow river speed down. You saw how to look at the flow in map as you modify it right?

I’ll be honest, I don’t 100% understand either. What I will say is that it helps it look a little bit more realistic, and it helps make two roads intersecting look a little bit smoother. I’ve been using it on the roads I’ve been working on since learning about it and it does look better. I have not gone back and done my old roads. That’s going to be a ton of work and I’m not wanting to do that yet lol.

#

It also lets you keep the shape of the road when you turn off “adjust height map” so you can sculpt terrain around it a bit better too. It’s like having a cake that you can take pieces off of because it’s baked. But if you don’t touch it, it keeps its shape. If you keep adjust height map on, then it’s a frozen cake you can’t take apart. Is that a good analogy?? lol

Ah gotcha, that definitely would help in some cases. I was wondering if it was absolutely necessary as I’ve spent a lot of time making sure everything lines up/is good
