New year. New thread.

About: Steel Rain is a WIP total conversion mod for ARMA Reforger - now competing for MANW.

It borrows strong gameplay elements and direction from the top down MMO Foxhole, but retools them for the first person perspective and the strengths, scope and scale of Reforger/ARMA 4.

We would love your feedback and thoughts as the project moves along. Public support helps keep us motivated. 😊

Yeah, that's something we're trying to balance. Obviously we're leaning way more to realism than Foxhole is, but at the same time trying to make it more of a video game - which means distortion and amplification.

But I'm more focused on dedicated colour and silhouettes then oversized parts.

Thanks. Hopefully some skilled scripters come my way and we can accelerate. Right now my (Reforger Coding) skill level is setting the speed, which isn't fast 😛

Its not to hard. Don't feel like typing it all up atm. But you need to make the object, link it in a "outline" config file, and edit another config file to display it in the list.

Unknown. I just figured all this out by brute force.
The only other thing that needs updating is the game module that exists for the campaign map. It will have to be updated to use your modified config.

There's only two major entities, You got to look at the hierarchy of the stuff that's in your game world. And then it'll be a component in that big one. I'm away from my computer for the night.

That's very interesting!! Have you considered some MOBA elements? I think they have many concepts that could apply to a conflict style game mode. Like main battle lanes, secondary missions in between (jungle) and the character progression along the match.
It doesn't look like your're going that path, but there might be some elements you could benefit from.

How long do you plan for each match to take?

A neat thought regardless. Generally the way the battles play out in Foxhole, Is that there's an established front, and then you have about three pathways at "roadblock"/choke point (which just leads to another choke point or roadblock)

Eventually you have to slam into one of these blocks, but once you break that block then you get to choose if you're going to go left right or middle. Momentum, morale and impetus is super important, and being able to keep up the logistical grind determines the conflict more than anything.

Psychologically it is traumatizing to fight in the same 12 in of ground for 8 plus hours - but if you can do it, the battle can be yours to win.

With a more open map like Reforger has with Everon, People can just go around obstacles - It's the same problem they had in World War II with Mobile warfare. Anyone that's static... You just drive around them, isolate them, and move on.

So going back to the original point, there's kind of like lanes. There's the main fight. Then there's these side fights (partisans, deep recon) and then there's the back line, keeping it all together, rest and non-combat "lane"

Suffice to say they'll be something for everyone. I just hope we can get this mod out before we all die of old age 😁

@strange ridge Curious why the 1924 theme? The way I see it, the value of this mod will come from the gameplay/code. Setting it 100 years ago gives you 100x more work for little added value compared with keeping the Reforger art/setting.

Reforger is a FPS at heart, we could reskin everything in a few months and it could be pretty much every time period including future space.

You are correct that the value comes from the code. The art and the setting, while considerable effort is required, isn't the most time consuming part - at least when it comes to putting it in game. I don't expect that we have to do too much work to make it feel like World War I.

That said, to get to your question of why, It's because it's a simpler era. In a real modern combat we're hosing each other at almost kilometer ranges. Video games however fake it, and push us down to super small draw distances (<800m) and thus engagement ranges. When in reality we can see well over 50 km.

So by having simpler weapons, and simpler times, It fits more naturally the closer engagement ranges. It makes them more human-centric, infantry centric combat as well

Thanks. Base buildings is going to be the hardest challenge yet. But we're making progress on all fronts.

Small update: Armoured Cars have been started. 3D team is still cooking while scripting tries to break the building code. Building code will bend the knee eventually.
