Hello,

Diwako (AI/Scripts), Krogar (3D art) and myself (3D art/anims) are now actively working on this mod and I'm happy to tell you that it will be made available as a standalone mod. AMF will also release another version of the dog that is made specifically for their mod with unique features. AMF already released some accessories in their latest update, check them out!

What you can expect:

  • A custom unit with cool and realistic anims and sounds (ok maybe the sounds will be bad but I'll do my best)
  • Equipments made specifically for the dog (harness, patches, goggles, collar...)
  • An AI that features multiple behaviors and actions (search, fetch, take down, parachute...)
  • ACE compatibility

The preview version will tell if adding hair cards was a good idea or not. If you lose 20 FPS because of it, I'll probably have to remove some of them. I still can't give you a date for the preview.

This feature is very complicated to implement. Some modders have already tried it and I didn't like the result at all. In the end it was almost only visual and it was not very good. :/

maybe program the dog to only be able to move a certain distance from the handler as an alternative when a "leash" feature is active?

the max distance option is already a thing when the dog is told to just follow. the leash would be just a visual thing. due to pathfinding related sluggishness how ai walks it will not look really good

I just have to say, someone as myself who has been searching for the most โ€œrealisticโ€ ways to replicate a Tier 1 unit within Arma.. I have always felt having a K9 handler within the group would tie everything together. I am super hopeful for this mod and canโ€™t wait to see the final outcome. Thank you for your time trying to make this happen. I guarantee you the SOF Arma community will appreciate the heck out of this, if able to work properly within the game.

The takedown feature for the dog, is it going to be a "kill" type action or an incapacitation?

right now it is planned as a kill type thing. incapacitation is a bit of an issue with all kinds of medical systems out there.

I mean, dogs defusing mines is a bit out there. But I guess if the dev team wants to lean real hard into the 2030 setting of arma 3, the concept of dogs defusing mines could possibly work somehow. Maybe they could add a little eod bot attached to the dogs harness??? But i'm not sure why they would only be able to defuse mines once.

Update: I spent the week re-importing all the animations into the game due to a stupid error. This created some regression and I will have to go over the animations again to adjust them. Oh and the dog is now slightly smaller because of that. ๐Ÿ˜…

Starting to get the final touches going with my new unit. Going to be replicating a Tier 1 unit and I can't wait to add this K9 unit in. I hope things are looking good lol. Super optimistic about this mod.

In honour of my units first K-9 "bartholomew dingleberry smack-knuts the 5th" who we believed died either to a friendly CAS run or a friendly 40mm HE Grenade. We don't know which but high probability it was the friend 40mm HE Grenade based off of the Medal Clip.

I don't have too much time to devote to the mod again, but since I announced that a public version would be available soon,** I'm going to publish a version of the dog without scripts today**. It doesn't do much for the game as it is, but it might be useful to some of you anyway. If any scripters would like to share their work so that it can be integrated into the mod, I'd be delighted to do so.

It hasn't died. We fixed some issues with dog animations and configs and use them in Looters&Undeads mod with Moonie's permission. Dogs have more than 10 commands, can track animals, drop with parachute, take a ride in any vehicle, help you in combat vs zombies and other players, e.t.c. You can even put vest on them.
Integrated them only recently so don't have enough footage to show yet.

I'm considering picking this up to flush out the code base, but I don't want to sink the time into it if someone else is already working hard on this. Anyone here actively working on creating a standalone flushed out mod with this thats MP compatible?

Though, speaking of configs, I have added crouch stance for dogs, that only uses sprint animations to move - that was made in order to force dog to sprint towards enemies: I simply switch dog into the crouch stance when an enemy is detected, so the dog will always sprint towards the enemy, not slowly walk.
You might want to find another approach to that issue.

@novel grail Saw your comment about the pet animation, the animation for the humanoid is there but not configured, and there is an animation for the dog but its broken (ears and jaw rotate weird).

I can totally configure the humanoid one but didnt originally because I honestly didnt think it would be that popular haha, guess I was wrong.
