if someone is having to report to a probation officer twice a week and has conditions about remaining in employment/training and what they can do on the internet, they are being coached to live a more upstanding life

If they're booted out of prison after 18 months inside with $50 in their pocket and very little support otherwise, its a different picture

then trained llama 3.1 8b on that

there's several elements of this that have made it more challenging than i expected

the two main things are

the human raters are authoritative in this dataset so disagreement with them is just definitely wrong, and the LLMs often have (imo at least somewhat legitimate) disagreements

it's very hard to explain exactly where the line of "this account should be flagged" is

the other thing is, the human raters use their whole browser as part of the rating process, whereas the LLM only has access to a subset of text data e.g. username, list of friends' usernames, list of games the person plays, etc. this fucks up the success rate on a lot of the tasks because oftentimes something will be inappropriate about e.g. the avatar, or the profile picture of a game but not the title/description. the human rating takes this into account but the text data doesn't

anyway, I got to ~80% TPR, ~80% TNR on the fine tuned model (validation set, not train set) which I'm pretty happy with. this is at least a baseline to create more synthetic data that can be used in further rounds of training

here's the sys prompt i used, i experimented with a couple different extra instructions on top of this (basically "don't be too suspicious, don't be too lenient either") and nothing made much of a difference

without exception every LLM did an absolute trash job of matching the human descriptions of the accounts

some of that I can write off as having incomplete information but mostly it's just that they don't do a good job

the two problems I outlined earlier (incomplete information, human rater authoritativeness) certainly aren't insurmountable but they make this a lot harder than it would otherwise be

thinking about doing this but

there are two problems with that, one of which is quite major

the smaller issue is that the descriptions just aren't very good

most of them are quite brief and non-informative, which defeats the purpose of having the system in the first place really

"in ERP groups" for example is how most of the descriptions look

the bigger issue is that a lot of the time they reference information the LLM won't have access to, like "pfp is obviously nsfw"

from some of the papers I've read about data poisoning attacks, I worry that if I miss basically any of the "information in desc doesn't match information in text data" descriptions, it's going to teach the LLM that it can just hallucinate freely
