The top contributor to Luigi Mangione’s legal defense fund cited President Donald Trump’s recent executive order on the death penalty as their motivation for donating.

Trump’s order, signed on January 20, directs the attorney general to seek the death penalty “for all crimes of a severity demanding its use.”

Mangione, 26, faces the possibility of a federal death sentence if convicted of murder.

An anonymous donor contributed $11,000 to his defense fund, making it the largest donation listed on the GiveSendGo fundraiser.

The donor expressed concerns about the death penalty becoming “politicized” and feared that Trump’s order would exacerbate the issue.

“I am also concerned about the severe infringement on the defendant’s right to a fair trial and due process, particularly since his juries are effectively pre-tainted,” they stated.
