#That is fine and that is what should be

@limpid path I'll also drag this into a threat just to keep it clear in the main channel.
Right now the remote folder and the local folder are the same, they both have 10 sets of world files, it's just that the remote one has the character files too
They've always had 10 worlds each or you've just created them?
No, there were 6 worlds in the remote folder when I started this, 2 I've created recently, and 4 that were old versions of previous worlds from about a year ago
because a year ago was when I turned off cloud saves on my old computer
I haven't created any new worlds for this
You've not created any new ones, but the remote folder has 10 different sets of world files? Or am i misunderstanding?
Enshrouded Save Information
Details on where to find your save files, how save slots work, and how to manage them.
Save File Locations
Cloud Save (Default):
Open the folder where Steam is installed (usually C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam). You can find the path from your Steam client menu under Steam > Settings > Storage.
π Then navigate to userdata\\YOUR_STEAM_ID\\1203620.
Local Save (Cloud Save Disabled):
π %userprofile%\\Saved Games\\Enshrouded,
Save Slots & Backups
There are 10 Save Slots available for your game worlds.
Save Slots:
Slot 1: 3ad85aea
Slot 2: 3bd85c7d
Slot 3: 38d857c4
Slot 4: 39d85957
Slot 5: 36d8549e
Slot 6: 37d85631
Slot 7: 34d85178
Slot 8: 35d8530b
Slot 9: 32d84e52
Slot 10: 33d84fe5
Backups:
- Each slot has 10 rotating copies numbered
0-9.
The file at index0has no suffix, but is still part of the rotation. - The game references the file listed in the
-indexfile. - Every 10 minutes, a new copy is created, pushing the oldest out of rotation.
- There is no distinct "primary" saveβwhichever file the
-indexfile points to is loaded.
Managing Saves
Transferring Saves:
- This must be done whilst the game is closed.
- To share a save, copy the latest world save I.E (3ad85aea-7).
- Dedicated servers only use Slot 1. Rename a save file to match Slot 1 if needed.
- Files can be renamed to move them between slots.
Rolling Back to an Older Save:
- Open the -index file in a text editor.
- Find the line "latest": X (where X is a number from 0-9).
- Change it to the desired backup index and save the file.
Additional Notes
- The -info file contains metadata (like world name) but is not needed for servers.
- Each player generates their own -info files when creating a world.
- The latest world save files are what should be transferred.
Ensure you copy all required files when sharing a save. For servers, only Slot 1 is used.
The world file names are listed above, for reference.
the remote folder has 10 different sets, because when I pasted in the backup, then told the game to use local files... it didn't show those worlds BUT it kept the files in the remote folder, the ones that weren't overwritten by the cloud
...wait.
I think I see what the problem is
I didn't move the backup files to the local folder first, I ONLY moved them to the remote one
could that be why it didn't "see" them?
If you chose local files when starting the game, then yes, that's why it didn't see the remote folder, where you put the 'backups' you wanted to see.
π
I've found the right folder but there's nothing there except a json file
Local Save (Cloud Save Disabled):
π
%userprofile%\Saved Games\Enshrouded, - That location?
yes
I had a brain fart and was looking for it in the steam folder <.<;
now I've found it but, as mentioned, there's zip in there except a file called enshrouded_user.json
Did you copy or move the files when you made the backup? π
copy. I keep one folder with the stuff that was in my /remote folder when I started the whole process, and one with the mixed-and-matched world files
Where did you copy the 'local' files from to start with? To put in the mix and match folder?
Because they should have been in the location that's got the JSON unless otherwise specified (Which i'm not sure's even possible? )
from another hard drive, where I keep the stuff I copied over from the old computer
Ahhhhhh okay. Fair enough. Then in this case, that folder only having the JSON is perfectly normal and fine and wont interfere with the cloudsaves.
and I shouldn't try copying anything into that folder?
No need for the case of cloudsaving.
Only if you wanted the games to be on local saves.
The folder with your mix and match saves, it looks something like this? With multiple copies of the same world saves, yes?
yes!
Okay, run through the instructions here again and make sure that the steam cloud is turned off BEFORE you do anything.
Turn cloud saves OFF
Delete any files in the Cloud save folder.
Load the game.
Copy your Local saves into the cloud save folder with the game still running.
Turn cloud saves back on whilst the game is active.
Then exit the game.
Reload the game and you should now have your local saves with cloud saves on.
My screenshot is turned on, but it's just to show the location.
Okay, I'll try it!
And yes, the local is the mix and match, i was lazy and copy pasted π
now it worked... for 5 seconds and then I got a save data error
π
and all my characters are there but none of my worlds are
Well, this is why we work with backups π
the save data keeps coming up every few seconds
At what step is it coming up?
now. when I've done all you listed, and restarted the game, and my characters are there, but none of the worlds are
"save data error. data could not be read"
Can you close the game and go into your remote folder to see what files are in there?
all the files I just pasted into my remote folder, as per your instructions, are in my remote folder
There's two possibilities in that case... either something got corrupted/defunked in this move over OR the old files from your old system are kaput.
You can try the process again, that you just done to get it working and see if it works properly this time
If not, do the process again but ONLY with the files from the recently create worlds and not your old local saves, see what response you get from either of those.
Or, honestly, at this point, I might just restore the backup and call it a day
If the old saves might be corrupted I'll just have to live without them
thanks a lot for trying to help, though π
Getting the cloud to notice there's something there was the thing and then yea, with that message it's possible the old files are corrupted, but without trying again it's hard to say for certain. You've got the steps to repeat the process though so you can try again if you feel the need to. Sorry i couldn't get it working smoothly for you though!
It's okay, you did your best! sorry for wasting your time
It's never a waste of time ^^
The process worked perfectly to get things back to how they were earlier this morning. Which makes me inclined to think you're right that the old files are messed up
That's what it seems like. Depending on how long ago it was, they did change the saving system (April/May 24 i think it was) To have rolling backups, if your save was from before then, that might be the reasons but cant say for sure.
...ah, that may be the issue then
some of the old files are from May last year I think
oh well
I'd personally give it another try some time, once the nerves return a little, it might just be a steam cloud thing that didn't copy properly or something.
I might, or I might just put on some music and go out and grind all those resources again
after all, this last update changed weapons and armor and stuff, so a lot of that would be less useful anyway
If it's resources you're more worried about there are things such as Resource Worlds, which you can grab stuff from, to replace what you had before hand.
π Steam cloud being steam cloud.
