When you choose a "play selection", are you choosing Private, Host, or Join?

If you are choosing Private, that is your game, no one else can enter. If you are choosing Host, then people can enter, however you must set a password for the level of access you want them to have. From the sounds of things, you are not trying to connect to a "dedicated server" which is the "Join" option.

Is their game a "dedicated" server?

they're "Hosting" a game with an IP address

If they are not "dedicated" I have found it is easier to join their game via the Friends list on Steam.

Who is the hoster they are using?

Some of the hosters are still in the process of updating the Enshrouded servers.

Has the Enshrouded Server process been restarted since it was updated? Have the clients been updated, but not the server?
