no I checked with unpausing the two docking ports was clipped in each other. I fixed it in the vab

Another possibility: My undockee had a decoupler on it. It's stack went capsule, decoupler, other rocket junk. If I remove the decoupler it works fine. My cars also lacked a decoupler. Maybe there's a strange interplay between the docking port and decoupler that's causing issues.

I can dock and undock those all day.
