This is a personal story I experienced last week:
I am an RN. I’m freshly graduated and I just finished my orientation period and am finally independently practicing. It’s my first set, and my first night shift as a new graduate nurse.
One of my patients unexpectedly passed away shortly after I got off work the day before this happened. they were an older woman who had lung complications.
I’m working in the same area again with their room right beside the nurses station. I did my job and finally got all my patients squared away and they’re ready to sleep. I did my hourly rounds and all the patients were asleep and all the doors were closed. These doors need a good amount of force to open and close; they were closed throughout the entire night. I do hourly checks on all my patients during the night shift as I’m supposed to - the patients were asleep and the doors were closed. It was a quiet night till about 0230-3ish
I’m sitting beside another new graduate nurse who just finished their orientation period as well. We’re chatting and all of the sudden we hear a door creek open. Again, after my round all the patients were asleep and all the doors were closed. We didn’t pay too much mind to it but then we hear it again. We both get up and look and all the patients are asleep and the doors are shut.
after we sat back down after rounding we hear the water machine start dumping water (motion activated) We look but all the doors are closed and the patients are asleep. I’m thinking maybe it’s cleaning itself or something but It kept dumping water. We got up and looked and it was for sure not caused by someone using it. It got to the point we unplugged the machine.
After sitting backdown, suddenly, we hear a voice seemingly between both of us saying “can you hear me?” in a raspy older woman’s voice. We both heard the same thing and we checked and all the patients were asleep and all the doors were closed.
Open the window when someone passes to let them out
