The story of Centralia, Pennsylvania is pretty interesting. The town inspired the fictional town of Silent Hill. It was a mining town for quite a while and has history dating back to 1770! In an attempt to clean up a local landfill a fire in an abandoned strip mine pit which started a coal seam fire. There have been multiple attempts to control the fire, however the fire has been burning ever since and the town's zip code was discontinued and to this day the fire still burns and it's predicted that it will continue to burn for up to 250 years!
