Normal maps are in all sorts of different formats so converting them in real-time to octahedral is not performant
Not to mention that you'll have to figure out what format the original game uses
NOT NOT to mention that games often use a number of other optimisations like removing the b channel

unfortunately afaik there is no way to modify launch settings for vanilla gmod. But the install guide for x64 tells you to make a separate gmod install for rtx so steam updates dont break it. You can add the gmod rtx launcher as a non steam game like one user did here

i mean ideally id want RTX gmod to have its own set of addons but then that would require me to like unpack mods and manually add them to the RTX remix gmod via addons if i didnt want the two sharing mods though anything downloaded via steam workshop would still show up

You can ai upscale them
So that gives you pretty low quality textures
Or you can remake the textures yourself
But that requires a lot of effort and mastery

means the object is using a shader remix can't interpret
you'd have to modify the material file itself in source to use a fixed function fallback

and the hashes on 64bit only dont match because of the exe name right?

that way we can have single install that can swap between rtx and non rtx and have hash compatibility with portal with rtx and hl2rtx

i followed your steps to replace the skybox in this game. assigned a sphere mesh to an object marked as a sky (was actually the original sky in the game lol, it doesn't cull) and attached an emissive to it. the emissive is an HDRI converted to BC6S with nvidia texture tools
so the actual lighting seems to be working right
but the skybox is just this
not that i can find. it just looks that way

unsigned is better than signed as hdri shouldnt have negative values
also unmark it as sky
i had issues in the toolkit at least when it was marked as that
also make sure it does not have an albedo texture and that the albedo color is set to black

same for this actually. it unset itself somehow lol
that's the actual original sky texture that i'm replacing
so i had that marked as sky, with the new mesh + emissive attached to that mesh replacing it
have you done any emissive overrides or adjust emissive intensities in the runtime, theres like 574 places where you can do that
those should all be set to 1 iirc
and can you send a screenshot of your material config from the toolkit, or send the relevant .usda
have you "removed" the root mesh
set emissive intensity to 1
ruffness to 1 as well (my jee key doesnt work rn lol)
i deleted the original mesh
it's just the sphere now

cos sometimes toolkit doesnt let you turn off atmospherics properly
and those mess up the skybox
