Welp, still a lot of issues that I need to figure out, having some problems importing textures corretly, many texture maps just missing and doing weird things, texture wrapping modes seem broken which is why the walls are stretching

Seems like lighting is working well now, doing what I'd expect it to!

Volumetric lighting seems to be working somewhat okay now!
Turns out it only shows up if your settings are set to the higher setting levels though
Doesn't solve our fog problems in any way as what we need is distance fog, we can't create our fog by putting lights all over the place
But it IS cool regardless, will probably look awesome once we get the player flashlight working

Yup, floors, ceilings and parts of the pipes too.
Basically the issue is that the runtime is interpreting certain textures wrapping modes as "Clamped" whilst they are actually set to Tile
So sadly it seems to be a runtime issue that I can't do anything about atm, but hopefully there'll be a fix coming ^^

Skeletal Mesh Hashes aren't stable, so it's doubtfull I'll ever get to replace the character models
I believe that in the future we will achieve better performance even on these cards

So I too sat down and studied up on what kind of tree they actually are, but came to the conclusion that the actual shapes don't really match any of the fir trees native to Maine

What if they DIDN'T base it of firs local to Maine?
As us Silent Hill nerds know, a lot of various inspiration for SH came from Twin Peaks
And there's a very famous tree from Twin Peaks, the douglas fir!
It comes up often in the show
AND
The douglas fir happens to look pretty similar to what you see in the game
I heard that silent hill 2s town is based on a specific real town, but the "town" was just a big crack in the ground?
And it didn't seem to have any houses or anything
So I decided it'd be fun to keep that Twin Peaks fun in the game and decided to go in the direction of that, but manually tweaking the branch shapes to match what we see in the game a bit more

The original games character models are actually very well made, EXTREMELY so for PS2 standards
They would need some modification if you want to subdivide them properly, but not as much as you'd expect

You can subdivide a mesh but with how the original game renders the textures and lighting and stuff it wouldn't really make much of a difference

This section up here, I'm unsure wether to interpret that M shape as something that should be part of the shape of the model, or just in the texture
Because to me, this works as shading and gives it a funky curved shape
But in the original, it's just part of the texture, but it'snot like they don't have the geometry to actually model it

Just set up remix for SH2, you can run around and easily grab captures of the textures in a specific location
Makes them much easier to sort through

Well... you're just playing the game at that point
As long as you enable fallback lighting the entire game can be played from start to finish
But it's the capture button that's the interesting part
Just walk to somewhere where the asset you want to look closer at is, press the capture button and boom, you have the models and textures of everything in that area
It's better than opening the map part by part in the level editor too

like I see the water with the red boxes
and when it goes black, I can still see the boxes
on my phone its impossible to see too
I increased the brightness up to max to see better
this is how it looks for me every few seconds
it switches between that and the water texture
on my cell phone it's difficult to see because black tones are very dark (OLED), on the monitor it looks more "grey" (IPS) xD
even a zoom in is difficult for me

also, some locations in silent hill 2 are based on places in San Bruno, afaik

I'm going to be remaking all textures myself, don't want to just grab other peoples work, besides it needs to be done with PBR in mind, old photo based textures don't really translate well to PBR

Knowing what a clean version looks like is good to start with
sometimes dirt can be too visible, hiding the rest of the image
exactly, so having a clean version as reference lets you create the clean version, then add dirt on top of it

For some games yes, but currently for SH2 this isn't possible I'm afraid, they appear to be CPU skinned in how they handle the rigging and animation
Which means it's not compatible with remix
It IS possible to mod new models into the original game, and then replace their textures with PBR high res ones through remix
However the original game has a hard limit on how many polygons the engine can render for a character
So we couldn't really make a huge improvement through that method
Yes, I tried to change Maria's textures directly from the game files, but there is a memory problem in the files, the Enhanced Edition team (maybe) will correct this, just like they did with the option of being able to use high resolution textures (unfortunately only works for maps and some other things)
Yeeaaah, although the textures isn't really an issue, that could be done easily through remix
The real issue is that if I'm doing new character models, I'd want to make nice looking high poly ones
But old game engines typically had a VERY hard limit on how many polygons a skinned model could have
So I couldn't really bring the meshes up to a polycount that would make a great difference
And that's even IF we can figure out a workflow for how to integrate new character models into the old engine
Something that I couldn't even begin doing
If it were possible, it would be interesting, I would put Maria from DBD, just for meme 😂
I already started working on a Maria model in the hopes that it can be done some day ^^

these bright spots even look a little like the ones I saw in silent hill 🤔 but how I will find a reference to fit the pieces together to test?
behold, the most understandable part for my eyes were these deer jumping
its possible to see a fairy too xD
but for me, the most impactful was the deer
now I'm trying to find the wallpaper used in the apartments at the beginning of the game, because their quality is bizarrely bad, it would be a huge upgrade
I believe it can help to recreate the model for the RTX Remix too

If it had SM2 fallback modes it might've worked, but it seems to be SM3 only

I have munch's odyssey and had trouble getting it to work
i got monkey quest though and that started to work pretty good, it just requires me to do some fixes
i noticed none of the textures actually had their texture, and couldn't figure out how to give it to them without doing like texture terrain that combines all them
if you didn't see, you have to enable the "beta" version of it in Steam. Right click the game, go to Properties->beta->Original
this gets you the DirectX8 version of it. you then have to put this in the game folder alongisde remix: https://github.com/crosire/d3d8to9/releases/download/v1.12.0/d3d8.dll

So yeah, little update
Solved some issues, figured out some others! Turns out there were odd corruptions from my early access testing in the project making certain things behave weirdly, so I'll be doing a clean project set up which should take care of that!
But for now, the tiles are finally shiny as they should be, woo!
Also, I've settled on a name for the project moving forward ^^
The logo is still a WIP as well, need to work on the webby stuff more ^^

I am questioning one thing
I've added these small damaged areas on the edges
THe original kind of has them, you can see the grey blotches
But in the original they're just not pronounced at all, which gives a rather different feel
But unless it's this kind of damage, then I don't see what those grey parts are supposed to be, because "Grey blobs" don't just happen hhaha

That used to be the case but the Enhanced Edition fixed a lot of things about the PC version and now that is the recommended version

Yes, the enhanced team has added all the fog back and written their own custom sound engine to replicate the PS2 sound

I was working on a small passion project, a Reshade preset for Dead Space 2009 before the remake was announced, I made an optional colour grading that gives the game a reddish hue that's inspired by og survival horror classics, ala RE and SH(2)
I'd argue that dead space with that colour grading was more SH-y than whatever Bloober have brought us
what a joke Bloober team, they're going to fullfill every negative expectation and prediction the community have had for them, aren't they?

It's in the root, it's generated by the runtime when you change and save settings
and the rtx-remix folder
If you don't have one that means you've not changed anything in the runtime
But whilst my game doesn't crash in the menus, RTX remix does make the menus incredibly laggy
