Linux might not be comfortable for everyone, but it is transparent. No bloatware, no hidden backdoors. You have access down to the kernel. Windows or MacOS you don't not really know, what happens in the background.
Blender (3D software) is community driven and is mostly on par with Maya or 3D max or ZBrush.
Many libraries or frameworks, e.g. Hugging Face, nearly all python packages and python themself is open-source.
Even the Unreal Engine is open source.
This makes community work highly transparent and effective.
You are right that some projects of microsoft are OSS, but not all. The kernel and OS themself are not.
