When I try to import the demo package or open the demo project it gets stuck loading Demo/Character/Curve/C_Curve_Rifle_Unequip.fbx and won't ever finish.

Ok I seem to have gotten it working by first importing the asset in the package manager, then importing the demo package but unticking that asset. Then importing the asset package again with only that asset ticked. That particular animation seems to be working fine. Not sure why this happened.
