Thought I'd better move this to a thread...
Eg The Framework chromebooks are "proper" work machines:
The Framework Laptop comes in pre-built configurations with up to 32GB of DDR4-3200 and 1TB of NVMe SSD storage. We use Western Digital’s SN730 SSDs to deliver 3,400 MB/s read speeds with great power efficiency. With two SO-DIMM sockets and one M.2 2280 socket, all models are upgradeable to an insane 64GB of memory and 8TB of storage.

Thanks @valid maple
As I said at the summit, the generic ones you see at JB Hifi are just way too under-powered for my liking.
💯 Ian, those consumer models aren't really worth it if you want to use them for work. But eg. one of the Dell models spec'd out with 12th gen i5/i7 and at least 32GB, with builtin Linux container support, built in Android container, no hassles ChromeOS, now that makes for a great dev machine (as long as you dont need to build iOS apps! 😉
That sounds perfect. For the iOS side, I have a Mac Mini on my desk that is purely used as a build server for x86_64 code that I write in Go. So I could just repurpose that as well.
Just checked out the Dell site and they even look good. Normally Latitude laptops are clunky looking things, but these look nice.
But it still has a barrel jack for power. 😢
