In Tactics Ogre, Necromancer is a really useful mage type that besides specializing in a rare damage type can do a lot of useful tactical things like banishing phantasmal/undead enemies without bringing a cleric, move units around, inflict really nasty debuffs that are basically soul themed and do things like chop max stats, an improved charm, defense down, damage reflection, and of course turn corpses into zombies.
Nybeth from Palace of the Dead is from Tactics Ogre and he was orginally a necromancer but became a lich by the end which has its own abilities.
He was originally trying to resurrect his wife and in the process estranged himself from his children and really effed them up and eventually lost sight of his goal and just wanted to defeat death because his wife didn't want to come back. That's why Edda pissed him off when WoL inspired her to find peace.
