general recommendation is 1 combat and 1 gatherer
the thing to keep in mind is that retainers can only go as high as you are in that class
so if you aren't interested/intending to level gatherers, then no point in making them one of those

More basic than that - your retainers are your bank. You can store extra stuff with them so you don't have to carry it around in your inventory/armory/chocobo saddlebags.

for leveling them, send them out on specific 1hr ventures while you're on and then the 18hr ventures when you log out for the night/are gonna be away for awhile
what ventures you send them out at max lvl depends on what you need/want

@fluid apex Run the Eden raid (normal mode) and just roll "need" on all of the tokens that drop in the E5-8 instances until you have enough to pick up a full set of gear from there. You can also buy Crystarium gear for tomestones of allegory - which are capped at 450 per week - as you go, and/or pick up one piece of gear from the Puppet's Bunker Alliance raid every week (left side gear only).

@fluid apex I am already liking the game, the point is that the tree trial is endless. After finishing HW I could lvl every job to 60 and also professions. And also it could happen that after 6.0 releases the free trial cap will be 70.
If free trial had an expire date it would be easy to decide

Also treasure maps are known for their high potential profits. A normal L80 treasure hunt nets around 1.5 million gil.
